Bearenger the Grizzly is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian grizzly bear and a member of Wendy Naugus' Witchcarters.
Concept and creation
When adapting Bearenger, Ian Flynn intended to slightly avoid the "The Brawny One" stereotype. For his design, Bearenger's body was purposely made the inverse of Bark the Polar Bear's, while his clothing colors were based off his airboard.
Bearenger is a large and burly mobian grizzly bear with brown fur, white chest hair, red eyes, and a light brown muzzle. He wears a pair of white gloves with red and green cuff, and blue shoe with red stripes and white soles.
Bearenger and the rest of the Witchcarters once aided Wendy Naugus in her conquest of an island. However, Bearenger and the Witchcarters were defeated one by one by Miles "Tails" Prower who had come to their island, before the fox defeated Wendy and her brother Walter as well.
Shattered World Crisis
Bearenger and the Witchcarters were later forced to aid Wendy and Walter Naugus in an invasion of Eggman Land shortly after it became operational. Their actions did not go unnoticed, as Dr. Eggman soon arrived to investigate. Eggman and Metal Sonic were soon backed into a corner by the Witchcarters, who used the Dark Gaia energy they had stolen from the refinery to gain new abilities. Forced to retreat, Eggman called upon his Egg Bosses to reclaim the facility from the Naugus Twins and their minions. Bearenger was later seen with Falke Wulf and Carrotia the Rabbit on a ferris wheel, eagerly awaiting to destroy something. To his delight, he and his fellow Witchcarters faced off against Lord Mordred Hood and Conquering Storm. During the fight, Akhlut the Orca and Tundra the Walrus shut down the generator enabling Bearenger his powers. As a result, he became drained of his power and was reverted to his regular state of mind thanks to Hood's Vertigo-Inducers.
Bearenger wanted to get revenge on Wendy for controlling him against his will and thus joined Eggman's forces. However, Wendy was able to control him again when he was brought within the range of her magic. Bearenger then fought against Dr. Eggman and his Egg Bosses, but was defeated easily. He was then put under the control of Wendy once more as the latter was made an Egg Boss. Bearenger, the Witchcarters and Wendy subsequently got shots from the Injector so they could all be contacted and kept in line.
Soon after, Bearenger and the Witchcarters were recruited by Eggman to give back-up to the Hooligans and Metal Sonic in stealing the Chaos Emeralds and Gaia Keys from Castle Acorn. Bearenger and the Witchcarters distracted the Royal Guard long enough for the Hooligans to steal the Emeralds and Keys from Castle Acorn and then proceeded to slow down Gemerl. However, when Cream the Rabbit, Cheese the Chao, and Big the Cat rescued the Gizoid, Bearenger and his allies were forced to retreat.
Perpetually angry and foul-mooded, Bearenger is a short-tempered, brutal and vicious person to an extreme. After being dismissed as harmless by Dr. Eggman, Bearenger went on a berserker-like rampage, subjugating Metal Sonic to a relentless and merciless beat-down while making threats of dismemberment. When this angry, Bearenger will not stop fighting until his enemies are dead or he is forcefully calmed down.
Powers and abilities
Bearenger is the strongest of the Witchcarters and is brutal in a fight. When powered up by Dark Gaia energy, Bearenger's strength increases greatly because of his constant anger, allowing him to easily gain the upper hand against powerful opponents like Metal Sonic.
