The Egg Rocket[1] (ビームロケット[2] Bīmu Roketto?, lit. "Beam Rocket"), also known as Triple Score,[3] is a vehicle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an Egg Mobile-based combat module created and piloted by Dr. Robotnik.

Description[]

The Egg Rocket is a tall rocket craft powered by two pairs of rocket engines. It is composed of three sections with a cockpit set on top. The cockpit is guarded with a sparkling, possibly electric spiked ball that changes shape while hovering above it. The top and center sections have two laser beam cannons rotating around the sides.

Battle[]

The Egg Rocket is the second boss of Launch Base Zone Act 2 in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and the thirteenth boss overall in these games in Sonic and Tails' stories. In Knuckles' story in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it is the first boss of the said act and the eleventh boss overall. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it is battled with Sonic and/or Tails, while in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it can also be battled with Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.

Boss guide[]

The boss battle takes place on a platform suspended below the Death Egg as it gets re-launched. The Egg Rocket will either come down from above or rise up from below on the sides of the screen. The primary weapons it uses are the laser cannons, which will fire twice each time Dr. Robotnik passes across the screen. The craft is most easily attacked when it is rising up from below the floor, as the only part of it that is vulnerable to attacks is the cockpit. However, the player must watch out for the morphing spiked ball that orbits above the cockpit which will damage the player on contact. Touching the exhaust of the Egg Rocket will damage the player as well unless they are equipped with a Flame Shield.

Unlike other regular bosses, nine hits are required to defeat the Egg Rocket - four hits destroys the top part of the rocket, another four destroys the middle section, and the ninth hit destroys the whole craft.

If the player is playing Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or the 2022 remaster of Sonic 3 & Knuckles featured in Sonic Origins, the battle against the Big Arms takes place directly afterwards. Dr. Robotnik's Egg Mobile will rise up and attach itself to the Big Arms as the sky darkens ominously. In the original version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic or Tails complete Launch Base Zone after defeating the Egg Rocket, while the cutscene showing the score results afterward is the same. Sonic and Tails will end up in Mushroom Hill Zone after staying on the platform.

In Knuckles' scenario, Knuckles fights this boss controlled by the EggRobo in a different upper section due to the Death Egg being relaunched and destroyed before Knuckles' storyline. The tactics remain unchanged except that the morphing spiked ball starts at a different position for Knuckles each time the Egg Rocket appears on-screen, leaving less opportunities for the player to safely attack the boss. After nine hits, EggRobo will fly up from the destroyed Egg Rocket to take control of the Big Arms.

Trivia[]

  • In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, if the player controls Sonic along with Tails as a partner, Tails does not appear during this boss battle nor in the Big Arms fight, as he was left behind after the battle against the Egg Cannon. However, he appears alongside Sonic in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in the transition scene from the Egg Rocket's destruction to the Big Arms fight, the defeated Robotnik in his Egg Mobile would sink down past the bottom boundary of the screen before reappearing up again before the sky changes. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the defeated Eggrobo in its Egg Mobile moves upwards instead of downwards, allowing the Big Arms fight to commence sooner compared to the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This change has also been done in the 2022 remaster of Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic and Tails' stories (where Sonic and Tails also fight the Big Arms).
  • This is the only boss in Launch Base Zone Act 2 that all three playable characters fight in the original version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
  • Through Debug Mode, it is possible for Sonic and Tails to fight the Egg Rocket where Knuckles would fight it, and vice-versa. If Knuckles encounters this boss in the area where Sonic and Tails would fight it, the Eggrobo will be piloting the Egg Rocket, which will show a lot of broken textures, though the fight will be the same. After defeating the Egg Rocket, the player will have to open a Capsule, and then watch the cutscene to Mushroom Hill Zone, both of which will be pretty much the same.
    • By encountering the Egg Rocket as Sonic and Tails in the area where Knuckles would fight it, Dr. Robotnik will be piloting the mech, which will look as normal. After defeating the boss, the score counter will automatically appear like normal. However, the platform the playable characters are standing on will slowly go up as broken textures randomly appear on the screen, with the Death Egg falling afterwards. The game will appear to enter a softlock state where it will no longer progress to Mushroom Hill Zone until the player enters object placement mode and moves their cursor down once the player's character is scrolled out of view. If the player does this too early, they will instead reach the rocket platform where their characters are intended to fight their bosses and from this point, the game will enter a softlock state which the player can only escape by resetting the console or pausing then press Sega Genesis A Button to return to the title screen.
