Battle Kukku XVI (AKA "Speedy") becomes Tails' rival as they clash repeatedly throughout the adventure.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

Battle Kukku XVI (バトルクック16世 Batoru Kukku Jūroku-sei?),[2] also known as "Speedy" (スピーディ Supīdi?)[2] due to his fast flying, is an antagonist that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is the secondary antagonist and a recurring boss in Tails Adventure. This rooster is heir to the throne of the invading Battle Kukku Empire.

Appearance[]

Speedy has a similar appearance to the grunt soldiers of the Battle Kukku Empire, but is notably taller. His body is white, whilst his legs, wings and beak are a warm yellow. He has brown wattles behind his beak. He wears tall brown boots, a green shirt and a pointed green helmet, similar to those worn by the Rock Throwing Combatants and Sniper Kukkus. On the back of his shirt is a jet pack.

During the last duel in Battle Fortress, he now wears armor with a blue and grey color scheme. The armor has blue neck guards and his arms are now laser blasters. He replaced his brown boots with blue shoes and has now a larger jet pack.

History[]

Tails Adventure[]

In Speedy's only game appearance, as the Battle Kukku Empire discovers the Chaos Emeralds on Cocoa Island, Speedy and his troops were sent by his father from the Battle Fortress to find them. In the game, Speedy can be first seen and encountered on Polly Mountain. After the battle he drops a Chaos Emerald and flees to the Battle Fortress.

He is seen again near the end of the game, as he challenges Tails to a duel at the end of the Battle Fortress stage, but this time he has enhanced battle armor. Despite this Tails manages to defeat him and he is seen to explode and be gone for good.

Powers and abilities[]

During the battles against him, Speedy is capable of hovering at high speed in the air and is able to perform corkscrew dive-bombs.

Equipment[]

In his second fight with Tails, Speedy uses battle armor with an energy gun and a jet engine on his back. This armor lets him take even faster flight and hover in midair, and its armaments can fire both energy projectiles and fiery waves.

Battles[]

Polly Mountain[]

After fighting his way through the avian soldiers swarming Polly Mountain, Tails finally reaches Speedy, who immediately bolts straight up to the sky. Tails (with a somehow infinite flight gauge) must pursue the crown prince as they dart amidst the mountain's upper limits. Speedy periodically attacks Tails with a corkscrew dive-bomb from above.

There are no means of actually damaging Speedy during the encounter; similar to the Egg Mobile encounter in the original Sonic the Hedgehog, victory comes simply by making it to the summit of the mountain. At this point, an exhausted Speedy drops the pink Chaos Emerald and is shown flying back to the Battle Fortress.

Battle Fortress[]

Speedy is then fought as the second to last boss in Battle Fortress. At the beginning he is seen standing and then starts flying around in battle armor. The battle takes place in a room with four platforms around. Speedy starts moving around the room, and at times he quickly loads and releases a blue energy ball toward the player. When Speedy arrives to the left or right side of room, he will also shoot three waves of fire at the player with his jet pack. After doing his attack he will apparently change his flying pattern as well.

By simply touching Speedy damages the player and takes three Rings. Tails has to dodge him, who can fly across the player and his attacks as well. To defeat Speedy, the player has to throw bombs at him twelve times until he starts to exploding and getting completely destroyed. The player has then fly up to the roof of the room, then the player will face his father in final fight.

Archie Comics[]

Post-SGWSpeedy

Speedy, from Sonic Universe #83.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Battle Kukku XVI, commonly referred to as "Speedy", was the son of the Grand Battle Kukku XV and the next in the line of Battle Kukkus to take over the Battle Bird Armada. Despite his loyalty to his father, he feared him and once tried to escape the armada, but to no avail. He also had a personal grudge at Jet the Hawk after being snubbed years ago. During the armada's time on Cocoa Island, Speedy developed a respect for Tails after he foiled their operations there. Speedy later helped the armada seize Babylon Garden, but their plan failed when the Babylon Rogues betrayed them.

After the timeline was rebooted following Worlds Collide, Speedy is now virtually identical to his game counterpart.

Trivia[]

  • The Battle Kukku Empire appears to operate a rather idiosyncratic system of archontology, pre-emptively granting Speedy an imperial numeral while his father is still very much alive and well.
