Sir Bartleby MontClair of Dresdin is a character that appears in the Sonic Underground television series. He is a rude, posh aristocratic mink and one of the wealthiest civilians of Robotropolis.
Appearance[]
Bartleby is a blonde-yellow mink with curled blonde hair with two large curled bangs at the front (one longer than the other), two separate eyes with black irises, a tan muzzle with a round brown nose, little black eyebrows and a muscular build.
He wears pale red coat with a cream undershirt and gloves, a black belt, and green breeches. He also wears a pair of black "colonial" shoes.
History[]
TV series[]
Season one[]
Bartleby was Sonia the Hedgehog's fiancé, but she called off their engagement for an unstated reason. Presumably it was either for personal safety, because of Bartleby's views on Sonia's association with the resistance, or her biological family not behaving as 'posh' as he and Sonia were raised.
Eventually, Bartleby was pronounced an enemy to Dr. Robotnik and was put on (a corrupt) trial. He was purposely found guilty, thrown in jail and was scheduled to be roboticized, but the royal hedgehogs helped him escape and he was forced to go into hiding to escape Robotnik's forces.[1]
Personality[]
Pompous, conceited, and narcissistic, Bartleby loves himself more than he does anyone else (except maybe Sonia and rosebud tea), this being a direct result of his upbringing. In the face of danger, he will become cowardly and hide, preferring to stay out of harm's way.
Bartleby seems to look down on those lower on the social scale than he is, referring to them as 'peasants', but he does seem to still hold onto some scale of morality. In "Head Games", Robotnik advised Sleet and Dingo to avoid telling Bartleby about the plan to roboticize the locals in order to have staff for the posh resort, knowing he would not support this. When the duo began to destroy the village to search for the triplets, Bartleby openly objected (mainly because they hadn't purchased the island yet), and seemed appalled when learning their true intentions.
Relationships[]
Sonia the Hedgehog[]
Bartleby cares deeply for Sonia's welfare, despite any shortcomings and faults he may have with her. They don't see eye-to-eye often, as he constantly talks down to her brothers, Sonic and Manic, and urges Sonia to return to her high-society life that she was raised in by the Windermeres, out of concern.
Dr. Robotnik[]
Bartleby has a complex relationship with Robotnik. On one hand, he and his family are spared by Robotnik's roboticization (as long as they pay him in exorbitant taxes), while on the other hand Robotnik occasionally gets suspicious of Bartleby due to (among other things) his former engagement with Princess Sonia, the daughter of Queen Aleena. He also is seen assisting Robotnik on more than one occasion, usually through funding whatever evil scheme Robotnik has planned. It's quite possible, however, that he is unwilling to do and is forced under such extreme circumstances.
Trivia[]
- Bartleby has an appearance and personality similar to that of Antoine Depardieu from the Sonic the Hedgehog television series. In the episode "Come Out Wherever You Are", Sonia even imagines him in a royal uniform resembling that of Antoine. His last name also sounds French which could suggest that Bartleby (much like Antoine) is meant to be French or has French ancestry (like Nanette Manoir in Angela Anaconda).
- Although, he speaks in an upper-class British accent, as his voice actor is British himself.
- His voice actor Phil Hayes also played Scratch in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series.
- His Latin Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese (redub) voice actors, René García and Alfredo Rollo are also the voices of Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z.
