Plot[]

The episode opens with a flashback to Green Hill: Sonic is keeping his eyes covered with his gloves and being taken to a mysterious surprise present by his friends. Curious, Sonic asks if he could open his eyes yet, to which Amy tells him they're not ready. Sonic is suspicious and declares to Amy not to be tricking him to fall into water again, which Amy quickly promises him that it's not that, and it's something he's going to love.

When they finally finish preparing, Amy tells Sonic to open his eyes. It is revealed that the gift was a palm tree, which Sonic is annoyed about and claims that the gift was a trick. Amy quickly corrects him, but Sonic is still upset because of the amount of other palm trees he visits daily. Amy tells him that the gift wasn't the tree, but instead the memories that they made around the tree. Rouge, Tails, Big and Knuckles, who were also around the tree, begin to remind Sonic of the good times they've had here. Amy is pleased with everyone, and asks Sonic if he understands now, to which Sonic doesn't. Instead, Sonic is still convinced that the tree isn't special, and asks everyone if they are being too sentimental, before switching to the chili dos Big brings out, eating them. Amy is upset, muttering that he doesn't really get it.

In the present day, Sonic is grunting while waking up, he quickly remembers the situation. Thorn Rose had taken the Prism Shard and loaded it onto her hammer, in hopes of using it to regenerate the jungle. Being the only thing that could help send Sonic home, he decides to stop her. Thorn is preparing to leave in order to shut the Scavengers out, but firstly, is trying out the Prism Shard by using it to grow plants and trees. Sonic tries to remind her he is not her enemy and asks her kindly to hand over the Prism Shard so he can put it with whatever Shards remain of the Paradox Prism besides the red one he found in order to go home, but she refuses and insists on using it to "protect the Green." Sonic quickly realizes that she is seeking the Scavengers and tells her that he doesn't want to hurt her, but will have to if she goes through with using it against the Scavengers. She tells him he doesn't have a choice, so he runs towards her to take the Shard, only to be locked away in a cage made of small trees. Thorn, riding her pet Birdie, rode off into the Boscage Maze to seek down the scavengers.

Sonic, who is sealed between the trees, with his head sticking out, attempts to relive stress by reminding himself that the Scavengers couldn't possibly just be sitting around eating bark. Meanwhile, the Scavengers are sitting around doing just that, while Hangry Cat insists on it tasting nice. Sonic freaks out and decides he must break free at that instance. He looks around for exits and sees how the cage lacks a roof. Sonic then uses his Boscage Blades to escape, before running off into the Boscage Maze to find Thorn Rose and the Prism Shard.

He quickly catches up to Thorn, who is riding Birdie at rapid pace. She is shocked to see him back, to which he rubs in slightly, but then quickly switches to a serious tone and tries to explain himself to her and tells her he does not want to hurt her, but he has to take her hammer. Thorn is angered and tells him the only thing he'll get is a beating. Sonic dodges some hits, and jumps to steal the hammer, but is outdone by Thorn's grip and arm strength. She throws him off the hammer and begins to raise plants to hinder him from following her. At first, Sonic is confident and continues to dodge the plants. He hits a plant, but continues to chase her anyways. Sonic after a chase, eventually gets cut off by Thorn's summoned trees and gets launched back up to the canopy. Sonic is angrily greeted by the Scavengers and ask him what he wants there, referring to him as a traitor. He tells them they have it backwards, and they are the traitors, as they had tricked him telling him they would help him get the Prism Shard. The Scavengers are confused by this, thinking that he was after their food supply of bark, to which Sonic tells them that nobody wants the bark, but instead Thorn Rose is on her away to them right now, and tells them to quickly make up with her and put away any beef with her.

The Scavengers are confused by what he means by this, so Sonic tells them to both find a common ground with each other. Still confused, one shouts to Sonic that they cannot, as they live in trees. Prim Rouge comes forth and tells Sonic that there is no possible way to do that, not anymore. Sonic is puzzled, so she begins to explain her side of the story. As far as the story goes, the Scavengers and Thorn Rose used to be friends, and they shared the jungle and the spoils that came with it. She tells Sonic that they only used to take what was necessary, but one day, she went insane and started chasing them all out of the Boscage Maze. Prim Rouge tells Sonic there is no possible way to find common ground with a monster, but Sonic insists that Amy has to be in Thorn Rose somewhere. Sonic tells the Scavengers again to make peace, Prim Rouge tells him that they are done with this conversation, but Sonic continues and tells them that when Thorn Rose comes, to act as friendly as possible to try and see each other on better terms.

All of them feel a rumbling and trees start popping up around them; Thorn Rose is almost there. Sonic tells them to come with him, the scavengers ask if they have a choice, so he tells them they do not have any other choices. Thorn arrives, so Sonic begins to explain his plan to them, by telling them to go in nicely, but before he can finish, all the Scavengers begin to leap down to attack Thorn. They are stopped, and Sonic tells them to follow his lead this time. They agree, and slowly enter the Boscage Maze. As they arrive, the Regulators on Sonic's shoes glow brightly, meaning that Thorn is approaching with the shard. Thorn is now standing right in front of them, and Sonic tries to act casual, greeting her friendly. The Scavengers and Thorn begin to stare each other off, so Sonic comes in between them and begins to enact a potential conversation. He pretends to be both Thorn and Prim Rouge, and starts making compliments about one another, which neither the real ones are impressed, before ending in a hug. Sonic tells them to make a conversation about one other, and end in both sides of their issues. He then tells them to start by discussing their feelings, which quickly makes Thorn turn, and Sonic insists on her telling them her feelings. As they remain relatively silent, Sonic begins, telling them they shouldn't interrupt him so much.

Sonic tells Thorn to tell them her feelings, but she is shy. While she is distracted, the Scavengers start an assault on her, but Sonic stops them and tells them they agreed to follow his lead. Infuriated that they started to do so, Thorn tells them she feels angry. Sonic tells her he knows that already, so Thorn tells him the Scavengers can't be trusted, then closing off the one remaining gap that leads into the Boscage Maze. Everything is left dark and creepy, and Sonic is disgusted, asking her what she has done. She tells Sonic it had to be done, Sonic tells her they'll starve, to which she replies with so be it. Sonic tells her they have to live in harmony, which Thorn replies by asking what he knows about togetherness. Sonic is quickly given his flashback to his palm tree gift in Green Hill again, and realizes what Amy meant when she gave him the palm tree gift with everyone else. Sonic tries to explain sentimental value to her, so Thorn tells him it is "garbage". Angered, Sonic runs off to see what the Great Green has to say about it, which shocks Thorn and she quickly chases after him on Birdie. Being so dark, Birdie is hit, and given an injury on her wing. Thorn tells her she has to keep going, and Sonic is probably there by now.

Sonic arrives at the Great Green, which is now plunged into darkness and starting to wither due to the lack of light. He is upset, and talks to the tree, telling it he has a plan. Thorn arrives, and snarls, telling him to get away from "her tree". Sonic refuses, so Birdie takes to the air, but cannot keep flying because of the roof of trees and is knocked back down. Sonic tells Thorn to face facts, and that he was right, to which she ignores and tells him off for hurting the Great Green. She causes the handle of her hammer to rapidly extend towards Sonic. Sonic jumps and destroys the handle as it does so, causing the head to fly off and break the trees above the Great Green. Thorn, shocked at the sight of the withered Great Green, asks herself how she let it get like that. Thorn is deeply upset with herself, claiming all she ever wanted to do was protect the Great Green, but she instead was hurting it. She briefly tells her side of the story, claiming all she ever saw the scavengers do was take, and they would continue to take everything from the Great Green. Thorn tells Sonic that afterwards, she could never re-become who she used to be. As she breaks down crying, the Scavengers apologize to Thorn, having never seen the situation like that before. With the light back, the Great Green begins to quickly nourish, with the plants around it nourishing too, creating a beautiful view. Once again, Sonic has a flashback to the Palm Tree. After a while, Thorn and the Scavengers are re-united, and Sonic tells Birdie to go up into the sky and stretch her wings. He turns to Mangey Tails and tells him to spin his tails and fly too, to which he enthusiastically does. Seeing the sight of Birdie fly makes Thorn realize that she had been so selfish in trying to keep the Scavengers out that she had been unintentionally keeping Birdie from flying.

Sonic tells Thorn that the Shard had ruined the balance of nature and their friendships. Thorn asks if there is any way they could make up, so Sonic reminds her of what Amy once said, but claims it was a little corny. Thorn says that Amy sounds pretty great, to which Sonic agrees, calling Thorn great. Both the scavengers and Thorn agree to take responsibility for what they did, and agree to be friends again. Sonic quickly remembers the Prism Shard and his goal to get home, so he says his farewells and races to the canopy. Sonic spots Birdie in the air, who points him to the Shard's location, and he races down to get it. As he speeds though the jungle, an apparition of Shadow suddenly appears, telling him he is lost in the Void and that Sonic has to keep moving before dissipating. Sonic becomes distracted by this and trips on a vine, touching the Prism Shard by accident, sending him once again into the Void. Sonic arrives once again in New Yoke City, where he sees a bunch of rebels fighting off the forces of the Chaos Council lead by Renegade Knucks. Sonic looks on with shock.

Trivia[]

  • The name, "Barking Up the Wrong Tree", is a double pun: The first being the idiom, which means to be pursuing the wrong thing. The second being the Great Green, which would classify as the "Wrong Tree". There is also the potential that it could be a joke on the on-going joke of "Bark" in the Boscage Maze, with it usually being eaten by the scavengers.
  • This episode is the first one of the show to not feature Dr. Eggman or any of his Shatterverse variants.
  • Sonic makes the first reference to the line "Gotta go fast!" from Sonic X in this show.
