The Balloon (バルーン, Barūn^?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a balloon-shaped enemy full of red fluid, which dwells on Ouranos Island.

Appearance

A Balloon is a black and red spherical-based enemy. In the middle of its body is a reddish-purple balloon filled with a watery substance, capable of sucking the player in and draining its oxygen gauge. It has two black covers: One on the top and bottom, which glow red when the player hits it. The top seal - which is considerably larger - consists of a pentagon-shaped ring supported by a five-sided star and black rings with red-glowing eyes. Its face at the top of its body consists of one eye, which glows red, and two horns, shaped like a horse-shoe. Below the eye are six digits. The underside of the top seal has a jagged pattern. The bottom seal consists of a small pyramid with incisions on each base.

When the enemy is defeated, the balloon bursts, releasing the water it once possessed and dropping Skill Tokens(or other items) which can be collected by the player.

Overview

In Sonic Frontiers, the Balloon is an enemy type present in Rhea Island and Ouranos Island. Prior to encountering the player, they are found floating in place up and down in the Open Zone field. Although they make no active effort to attack the player, if the player comes into contact with a Balloon, it will engulf them, expanding in size and moving slightly(or a lot if on one of Rhea Island's towers) in the process (how and where the Balloon moves depends on the specific Balloon, and their map placement). While inside a Balloon, the player is at risk of drowning from the water contained inside, but can also perform any amount of consecutive mid-air Double Jumps. To escape, the player has to do a Stomp three times while inside it.

Powers and abilities

In addition to being capable of a limited form of flight, Balloons can engulf opponents, potentially drowning them.

Trivia

• When Sonic is running out of breath in this game, a buzzing alarm is heard generally. However, if Sonic is in the same situation when trapped inside Balloon, the jingle that plays in Sonic Colors, its remaster and the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World when Sonic is running out of breath is played instead.
