The Badlands,[1] also known as the Mobian Badlands,[2] is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a section of the Great Desert, resembling a barren rocky plain.

Description[]

The Badlands is a barren desert plain, with small mountains of rock occasionally dotting its surface. A different section of the Badlands was shown to be slightly more fertile, possessing several patches of grass and dead trees.[1][2]

History[]

Past[]

In the year 3221, the hedgehog brothers Jules and Sir Charles located the escaped convict Julian Kintobor in the Badlands in a routine scouting mission during the Great War, where he was rescued and brought back to the Kingdom.[3][4][5]

First Robotnik War[]

During the subsequent reign of Julian/Dr. Ivo Robotnik during the First Robotnik War, the Badlands were used as a battleground for Sonic the Hedgehog's fight with the Beetle 'Bot, Princess Sally's Soul-Quest with Nicole and the Knothole Freedom Fighters, and a path that Sonic took en route to the Robo-Hobo Jungle.[2][6][7]

The Chaotix Caper[]

Following Robotnik's death, Knuckles the Echidna somehow came across the Badlands while returning home from his adventures in Mercia and Albion. Locke and Sabre watched Knuckles confront a gang of bears on motorcycles, and were concerned by the now awakened use of Chaos powers, forcing a need for a meeting of the whole Brotherhood of Guardians. Knuckles used a Guiding Star Gem to return home from the Badlands.[8][9][10]

Operation: Triple Threat[]

Over a year later, the Badlands served as the battleground between a large SWATbot horde dispatched by the Eggman Empire as part of Operation: Triple Threat, and the defenses at Fort Acorn consisting of the Mes Braves Battalion, Chaotix, Amy Rose and a G.U.N. expedition force with Rouge the Bat. Ultimately, the SWATbot forces were destroyed by the combined defenses, which ensured the force field around the irradiated Robotropolis was maintained.[11][12][13]

Chaotix Quest[]

The Sand-Blasters (plus Charmy, Espio, Ray, and Vector of the Chaotix) later visited the Badlands for a slave trade between them and the Great Desert Dark Egg Legion. However, Jack Rabbit had no intention of honoring the agreement, and ambushed the Baron in his tank, using several Sand-Blasters disguised as captured Dark Egg Legionaries. Seeing this, the Chaotix sprang into action to rescue Mighty, only for Jack to realize their true allegiances, and attempt to run them over. Ray, however, managed to reach the tank, and convinced Matilda the Armadillo to help them stop the Sand-Blasters, which she did by sending an attacking Jolt the Roadrunner flying through the air, before subsequently being mortally wounded by a missile from a Sand-Blaster tank. This greatly enraged Mighty, causing him to break free of his shackles, and go on a destructive rampage against the Sand-Blasters, before being calmed by his teammates, and leaving the Badlands along with them to help his sister.[1]
