The Auto-Slider (オートスライダー Ōtosuraidā?), also known as Auto Slider, is an Extreme Gear that appears as a Board type in Sonic Riders and later as a Bike type in Sonic Free Riders. It automatically performs slides when making a sharp turn.

Game appearances

Sonic Riders

Auto Air Slides when cornering!

— Description, Sonic Riders[1]

Description

This Extreme Gear first appeared in Sonic Riders as a Board type Extreme Gear called the Auto Slider. It can be purchased at the shop for six hundred Rings from the beginning of the game.

In Sonic Riders, the Auto Slider is a typical board-shaped Extreme Gear. It has a primary yellow color scheme, with white curved shapes down the middle and white edges on the front and back. Most noticeable, it has a recess running down its middle that almost splits it in half.

Abilities and traits

As a Board-type Extreme Gear in Sonic Riders, the Auto Slider is well-balanced in its attributes with average statistics and an average rate of fuel-consumption and is suited for general riding.

When using the Auto Slider in a race, it will automatically perform an Air Slide a second after the player performs a sharp turn, while consuming next to no amounts of Air, effectively allowing the player to perform sharp turns without using the controls. However, the player can still perform Air Slides normally with the Auto Slider.

While its little Air consumption from sharp turns makes the Auto Slider a practical Extreme Gear, it can be rather difficult to manoeuvre due to the lack of control the player has over the direction they are heading in when performing the Auto Slider-induced Air Slide, since the Auto Slider starts using it automatically whenever when the player only intents to do a normal turn.

The Auto-Slider also allows the player to slide in the same manner when using Air Ride in midair, allowing for sharper midair turning. This effect can be manipulated to race from out of bounds without falling off the map and having the player's position reset, thus allowing players to get unnaturally fast lap times.

Sonic Free Riders

Build for optimal cornering, this gear automatically begins drifting when you begin a curve

Description, Sonic Free Riders[2]

Description

The Auto Slider returned later in Sonic Free Riders, where it is renamed Auto-Slider and has been redesigned to be a Bike type Extreme Gear. According to its profile, the Auto-Slider is in this game built for optimal cornering. It can be purchased from the shop for 400 Rings.

Due to having been made into a Bike type Extreme Gear, the Auto-Slider underwent a complete redesign in Sonic Free Riders. In this game, it appearance resembles that of a regular streamlined lime green, white and brown motorcycle with fins on its rear.

Abilities and traits

As a Bike type Extreme Gear in Sonic Free Riders, the Auto-Slider is more powerful, but less maneuverable than most other types of Extreme Gear and allows its rider to punch through obstacles and barricades. Its abilities and attributes concerning sliding in sharp curves are the same as in Sonic Riders, though it in this game boosts in the direction the player is facing whenever he/she makes a particular sharp turn. It can only be equipped with one Gear Part, as the first slot is always set to Power.

Trivia

  • This Extreme Gear shares its name with a similar device in the Japanese TV show Denji Sentai Megaranger (aka the original Japanese version of Power Rangers in Space); in the show, the Auto-Slider is a hoverboard that can turn into a bike, just as this gear appears as a board in Sonic Riders, but as a bike in Sonic Free Riders.
