Years ago, I discovered records of an ancient god of destruction called "Chaos." It was said to command the fury and force of the ocean - or something to that effect. I've begun developing a basic A.I.-driven apparatus that can generate cohesion in water and produce controlled shapes for basic actions. I've told the top brass these can turn any body of water into an autonomous weapon. Deep down, I'm hoping it can be used as easily deployed search-and-rescue units. Imagine: a flood turned back on itself to aid those in the rubble!

Gerald Robotnik, Gerald Robotnik's Journal

The Artificial Chaos (人工カオス Jinkō Kaosu?), also referred to as the Artificial Chaos Series[1][2][3] (人工カオス・シリーズ[3] Jinkō Kaosu Shirīzu?), are a group that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are mass-produced, computer-controlled bioweapons[2] and artificial life forms[3] developed by Professor Gerald Robotnik, designed as cyborg copies of Chaos. These lifeforms exist as masses of turquoise water with a mechanical head shaped like Chaos 0's. They occupy many areas onboard the Space Colony ARK, even after Project Shadow's shutdown.

Description[]

Universally, the Artificial Chaos are modeled after Chaos, specifically Chaos 0. They are powered by Chaos Drives, crystallized Chaos Emerald energy created during Project Shadow.[2][3] These lifeforms appear to be capable of mutation,[4] and are made out of water; this is possible thanks to the Chaos Drives themselves, which the Artificial Chaos use to harness liquids and create a fluid body.[2][3]

The Artificial Chaos are capable of performing quick tentacle attacks, and can pursue targets with laser irradiation from their eye sockets. Their water-based bodies also make them invulnerable to most attacks. However, they have a weak point: their head.[2]

History[]

Past[]

The Artificial Chaos' creation are although the symbol on their heads suggests they were involved in Project Shadow. The creatures were created over fifty years ago by Gerald Robotnik onboard the Space Colony ARK on behalf of GUN who wanted their own weaponized "Chaos monsters."[1][5][6] Although Gerald himself agreed to GUN's demands, his personal motivation behind his participation in their creation was to use the research to develop search-and-rescue units derived from the God of Destruction itself. The by-products of Gerald's experiments yielded the Artificial Chaos, who were based on "the god of an ancient culture" according to Maria Robotnik[7], but were originally made as flood rescue units. In time, the Artificial Chaos would be used as experimental research projects.[8][9]

Some time after being created, the Artificial Chaos went out of control both because of the Gizoid releasing them during his rampage, and due to Gerald accidentally reversed the positive and negative electrode connectors within them due to senility caused by old age, causing them to attack anyone in sight onboard the ARK.[10] The severity of the situation was so great that GUN Soldiers came to bring the experiments back in check. Although the Artificial Chaos situation would be resolved, Maria sensed sadness in the creatures as the battle unfolded.[11] In addition, this rampage ultimately resulted in the GUN Raid afterwards that led to the deaths of most of the Project Shadow staff, including Maria, and also led to Gerald's loss of sanity and execution.

Having apparently survived the GUN purge that shut down Project Shadow and sealed off the Space Colony ARK, the Artificial Chaos were left behind to guard the space station.[12]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2, the Artificial Chaos' solitude on the Space Colony ARK was disturbed when the parties of Sonic and Dr. Eggman made their way onboard the space station, prompting them to attack the intruders whenever they saw them.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Artificial Chaos were once again disturbed when the alien army named The Black Arms and GUN fought onboard the Space Colony ARK. Black Doom, the leader of the Black Arms, took an interest in the Artificial Chaos, calling them Gerald's legacy, and even remarked that "they are ours now", suggesting that the Black Arms took (or intended to take) control of the Artificial Chaos.[13] During his hunt for the Chaos Emeralds, Shadow would also have flashbacks about his encounter with the Artificial Chaos fifty years ago.

Shadow Generations[]

In Shadow Generations, the Artificial Chaos appear as enemies in Space Colony ARK, sharing their functionality and overall design with the originals from Sonic Adventure 2.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Rivals 2[]

In Sonic Rivals 2, the Artificial Chaos appears on a collectible card:

In other media[]

Sonic X[]

In the Sonic X anime series, the Artificial Chaos were briefly mentioned in Gerald Robotnik's diary.

Trivia[]

  • In Sonic Adventure 2, Artificial Chaos are not normally encountered until the player reaches Eternal Engine or Mad Space, both of which are level 4 2P Battle stages.
  • In Shadow the Hedgehog, all Artificial Chaos appear to have blood covering their heads. Likely caused by the ARK rampage seen in Lost Impact.
    • Also in Shadow the Hedgehog, the Cells can be sucked up by the Egg Vacuum. Once all the Cells have been absorbed, the Artificial Chaos' head and spine will be left unable to attack.
