Wings of Fire Part Two: Fighting Fire with Fire

It is night outside the Gaia Temple, where Sonic has just transformed into his Werehog form in front of the Shijin Warriors and the Freedom Fighters. Dulcy jokingly comments on how all that fur looks like a pain to brush, though Sonic remarks that she's just jealous. Bunker senses Sonic's purity in his corrupted state and is humbled that his chi has endured for so long. Chip, Cheese and Jian soon return from scouting with news that the Gaia Phoenix has been corrupted by Dark Gaia energy and that the missing Gaia Key Guardian Zonshen is trapped with it. After some brief confusion over Sonic's appearance, Jian reports that the Egg Clan Army is conspicuously absent from the area, as if they want the Freedom Fighters to have direct access to the temple grounds. Sally believes that Conquering Storm might set up an ambush and she asks Chip if he can use his reawakened powers to restore the phoenix. Chip replies that he might be able to, since the phoenix is a spirit, but it would need to be weakened first. Sonic volunteers to wear the phoenix down and Sally comes up with an ambush plan of her own.

Sonic and Chip soon enter the temple grounds and find Zonshen, but before they can take him to safety, the Dark Gaia Phoenix appears and Sonic proceeds to attack it. Meanwhile, Conquering Storm and her Egg Soldiers watch the ensuing battle while hiding among some bamboo. While Conquering Storm expects Sonic to fight the corrupted spirit in single combat, she wonders where the rest of the Freedom Fighters were, unaware that the heroes are right below her position knocking her ground forces unconscious. Sonic soon manages to weaken the phoenix by throwing a jar of water at it, forcing Conquering Storm to commence her assault. However, this allows the Freedom Fighters and the Shijin Warriors to get the jump on the Egg Army.

Sonic throws the Dark Gaia Phoenix at Conquering Storm, who dodges and attacks Dulcy. Conquering Storm tells Dulcy that her team's efforts were futile and that Sally's tactics only gave them a fleeting moment of surprise. But Dulcy reveals that their assault was only a diversion to give Chip enough time to restore the corrupted phoenix. In a flash of bright light, the Gaia Phoenix is purged of the Dark Gaia's energy and reverts back to its normal state. Conquering Storm orders her remaining forces to fall back to their mountain base, but the Gaia Phoenix flies off to burn it to ashes. Defeated, Conquering Storm congratulates Dulcy on her first victory, but then tells her it will also be her last before using a pellet to disappear in a puff of smoke.

After returning to Chun-Nan, Zonshen gratefully gives Sonic and the Freedom Fighters the last Gaia Key they need to restore the planet. Sally says she has a few thoughts on that, but for the time being is happy to known that Yurashia is at least in good hands.

Knuckles, Amy, Mighty and Ray infiltrate Thunderbolt's Egg Base while Thunderbolt herself gets chewed out by Doctor Eggman by her screw-ups. Thunderbolt presents the two Master Emerald shards that she found, allowing Eggman to conceive a plan that they could be used in. Thunderbolt then gets an alert that of the infiltration and proceeds to attempt to stop them.

While fighting their way through, Knuckles jokes that Ray has gone soft like Sonic had previously said, but witnesses him destroying a gun with ease, knocking out the soldier wielding it which prompts Knuckles to declare a friendly spar between them after the mission is over. Before the duo can grab the Master Emerald shards, Thunderbolt attacks them.

Ray and Amy secure the area, allowing Mighty to throw the capsule containing the Master Emerald shards to Ray. However, Ray does not account for his strength as he throws the capsule much further than Ray can reach, all the way in Moss the Sloth's possession.

Thunderbolt and her Egg Soldiers surround Knuckles and Mighty, but Amy messes with their audio and speakers in order for the four of them to escape. Knuckles states that he now needs seven more shards and worries he may be too late as the Freedom Fighters already have all the Chaos Emeralds and Gaia Keys. Amy pleads for him to not lose hope and through the use of her Mystic Melody ability, she finds out that quite a few shards are on Westside Island. After this, Knuckles and Amy set off for the Kingdom of Acorn.

Amy defeats Egg Soldiers by messing with their audio system. Knuckles protects himself by wearing headphones. Later, when Knuckles questions Amy about what the Egg Soldiers heard, he finds out that she had used Knuckles' mixtape without his permission and glares at her as she suggested the song was bad.
