Synopsis[]

Nicole shows the Prower family a recording of Amadeus Prower leading a large group of Mobian citizens to Castle Acorn. Tails and his mother, Rosemary Prower, watch with some apprehension as Nicole apologized, saying she wanted to inform them of the situation herself. Tails is confused about his father's motives, but Rosemary explains she and Amadeus had thought that, with everyone now safe in New Mobotropolis, this would be a good time for change. Sonic cuts in, saying an angry mob was not the way to do that and he "thought this guy was a tactician." Tails glares at Sonic and Rosemary pulls Tails away, saying some fresh air will help them both. Sonic is confused by their blunt exit, prompting Nicole to remind him Amadeus is, after all, Tails' father. Sonic understands, but nevertheless maintains that Amadeus' move was a dumb one, especially after Tails had worked so hard to save his family. Nicole points out there has been some tension between him and Tails lately; Sonic, thinking she was referring to their short spat after the destruction of Freedom HQ, brushed it off as the stress of the moment. Nicole clarified that she meant since Sonic's return from space, and suggested he talks with Tails. Sonic dismisses this as well, saying that he and Tails were fine as they were "practically brothers." He then excuses himself, wanting to see Knuckles before he leaves for Angel Island, and sped from the house, blowing by Tails and Rosemary who watched him leave.

Outside of Chuck's Chili Dogs, Julie-Su is trying to stop Knuckles from returning to Angel Island alone, but Knuckles insists otherwise. Exasperated, Julie gets Vector to back her up, but Knuckles continues to insist he must go alone, explaining now that things were more stable on the surface, he could take the time to check on the safety of the island. Julie-Su pleads, but Knuckles tells her he has his father, Locke, to assist him should there be trouble, and furthermore, he has issues to discuss with his father that he wants to do alone. Sonic arrives just before Knuckles was about to leave, planning to use the Guiding Star Gem to teleport to the island. Sonic offers him to use grey Chaos Emerald instead, but Knuckles reminds him there are 3 warring factions on the island that would like to get a hold of the gem. Turning to Julie-Su, he promises to contact her once he arrives on the island. Julie-Su, still in disagreement, lets him go. Bidding farewell, Knuckles activates the gem and departs to the floating island. Vector comforts Julie-Su, telling her Knuckles would be able to take care of himself, to which she replies, "He'd better."

Meanwhile, King Elias Acorn enters the detention center, intending to speak with Amadeus Prower about his actions earlier in the day. Entering the cell block, he's taunted and threatened by Bean the Dynamite and Nack the Weasel before Mammoth Mogul impatiently commands them to be silent. Slightly surprised by this, Elias thanks Mogul before addressing Amadeus; he asks why he lead a "riot" today. Amadeus assures the king it was nothing personal and it was not a riot, saying he merely thought the king would listen to the voices of the people. Slightly annoyed and concerned, Elias says this consisted of half the city calling for him to step down. Amadeus retorts that if he truly loved his people he would step down, and goes on to explain his reasoning: under the rule of the Kingdom of Acorn, they'd been dragged into the Great War, leading to the reign of Dr. Robotnik, and lost both Mobotropolis and Knothole. He goes on to say it was a group of children forming the Knothole Council and the Freedom Fighters was the most progress that was made. While meaning no disrespect, Amadeus tells Elias he has no experience in ruling a nation. During his time on Argentium, Amadeus says he saw the effectiveness of a government ruled by its people and only wanted the same for his own people. He asks the overwhelmed king if that answered his questions and bids him good day.

Outside, Sonic marvels at the new city, saying while he missed Knothole, New Mobotropolis still feels like home despite being made of Nanites. He then spots Elias on a bench and greets him, but it soon becomes apparent that he's unhappy. Elias explains he feels out of place, that he'd grown up an adventurer on Angel Island and had cracked under the pressures of his royal duties before, and yet is crowned king. Sonic reassures him, saying the people were only tense because of the recent destruction of Knothole, but Elias believes the problem is further reaching and he would give power to the people if not for one person... and King Max, with Queen Alicia pushing his wheelchair, appears. The former king tells his son they have much to discuss. Receiving a dry answer from his son, he continues on to say Elias needed to decide punishment for the traitors and their leader. Elias says General Prower had been imprisoned, but when he mentions taking it to trial, the former king cuts him off, saying a trial would be a waste of time and that they needed to deal with those whom he felt were conspiring against the kingdom severely. Sonic tells Max this would mean arresting half the city, and the king seems to forget who Sonic is and what he has done for him. Attempting to get back on track, Elias tell his father he they'd reacted too strongly to Amadeus' rally, saying it reflected the desires of the people. Fuming, Max says the people could say what they want, but it won't change the fact that the Acorns had been ruling for hundreds of years and would continue to do so. Blaming the rise in tempers on the weather, the former king suggests his family return to the castle, and Elias glumly follows, leaving Sonic confused at the escalation of events.

Later that evening, under cover of darkness, Tails airlifts his mother over the wall of the detention center. He tampers with the wiring controlling the door, but Nicole appears, warning against breaking into the facility before, with shock, she recognizes the Prowers. Tails tears out the wiring, effectively "unplugging" Nicole from the center. Inside, Mogul praises Amadeus for having a "remarkable boy," citing all of Tails' potential and the fact that he had used Tails' power to sustain himself for a time. Mogul tells Amadeus he should be proud of what Tails has accomplished, and Amadeus replies he is proud. Casually, Mogul says that Amadeus could add "aiding and abetting" to the list of Tails' achievements, prompting the general to look up; to his shock, he finds Tails and Rosemary. Rosemary tells his husband they are are here to free him and if they acted quickly they could stave off civil war. Rosemary tells him their actions, and the overreactions of the monarchy, have lead to high tensions and they need to act quickly. Amadeus says he doesn't want his family imprisoned, to which Tails says they are already too deep in trouble and he will do anything to protect his family.

Sonic, asleep in his home, is awoken by Nicole. Sonic turns on a light and asks for her to knock next time. Nicole apologizes and tells Sonic there is a breach at the detention center and they are trying to free General Prower. Sonic speeds off before she can tell him who's doing it.

Tails punches Sonic.

Free from his cell, Amadeus embraces his wife, who says it was only fair she free him from prison as the speech she'd written had helped put him in jail. Bean calls out from his cell, alerting the Prowers to Sonic's arrival. Tails quickly sneaks into an air vent before Sonic can see him. Rosemary defends her husband, insisting he's done nothing wrong. Sonic points out starting a riot against the king technically counts as treason. Rosemary says the people side with Amadeus, and that has to mean something. Sonic conceded it means that people agreed with him but still insisted it was the wrong way to go about things, and that breaking out of jail wouldn't help matters. Desperate, Rosemary asks how Sonic would feel knowing he kept Tails' father in jail. Sonic replied while the Prowers were his real family, Tails grew up with, and practically worshiped him and that "He'll get over it." Dropping from the ceiling, Tails tells Sonic to get over himself and punches Sonic to the ground. He tells his parents to escape while he kept the hedgehog busy. Rosemary refuses, but Amadeus says this is their only chance. The couple argue as they exit the holding room. As Sonic recovers, he bitterly tells Tails he would let the punch slide given the situation, but tells Tails get out of his way. He refuses.

Outside, Rosemary continues to lament leaving her son behind, and Amadeus admits he doesn't like it either, and they have to get out of the city. Rosemary says they need to end the situation as fast as possible. With Sonic busy, they feel that they wouldn't have much trouble getting into the castle, and decide to confront Elias directly and have him step down. Thinking about it, Amadeus tell his wife they need to stop by their house briefly. Back in the detention center, Tails continues to hold off Sonic, much to the amusement of the prisoners. Angry, Sonic demands Tails to cut it out, but the fox refuses to back down. Mogul taunts the hedgehog, further aggravating him. Sonic finally gives in as Tails races towards him, saying that if he wanted a fight, he'd get one.
