Zoneward Bound[]

Synopsis[]

Part One[]

Several years in the past, Sonic, Sally, Tails, Antoine and Rotor enjoy a winter morning in Knothole by having a snowball fight. They all gang up on Antoine and Sonic tries to land the finishing blow, but he slips on the ice and chucks a snowball at Rosie Woodchuck. Rosie fusses at Sally, causing the young princess to think about her missing father. Rosie apologizes while Sally's friends try to cheer her up. Hoping to lift Sally's spirits, Rosie suggests that the kids go ice skating at the frozen pond by the wishing well while she makes them snacks.

The kids head over and play ice hockey, but Sonic hogs all the glory. He skates so fast that the ice on the pond's surface melts, forcing the group to abandon their game and wait for Rosie. Thirsty, Sonic pulls up the well's bucket with Rotor's help, but finds a Power Ring frozen inside. The children notice that the pond has frozen over again and start skiing. The abandoned ring glows mysteriously and the group ends up skiing into three different portals that take them to other Zones.

Part Two[]

On the other side of the portal, Sally lands in a Zone with nothing but a rollercoaster. The ride ends in a free fall, where a ghostly image of King Acorn covered in crystal stands in her path. Sally falls through the image, shattering it, and finds herself encouraged to lead the Kingdom of Acorn and the Freedom Fighters despite her personal distress.

Meanwhile, Antoine, Rotor and Tails fall through a strange machine that causes their limbs to swap bodies. After coming back together in their proper bodies, the group falls down an endless pit. Tails realizes that they've been able to keep themselves together because they work as a team and the Ancient Walkers are impressed by the young Chosen One's wisdom.

Part Three[]

Sonic arrives in a green Zone that reminds him of his adventures with Mighty and Ray. Sonic runs ahead and finds King Acorn's former Warlord, Julian Kintobor. Julian demands to be called Dr. Robotnik and asks Sonic how he arrived in this Zone. Sonic asks how Julian arrived in the Zone, but Robotnik just attacks him with his Egg Mobile's wrecking ball. Sonic uses his "Sonic Spin" to destroy the hovercraft and decides he just wants to go home.

Sonic is spit out of a portal back to the lake where the other Freedom Fighters are waiting. At Sally's request, Sonic puts the bucket back in the well, not wanting to deal with more Zone hopping. Rosie arrives and offers the group her baked pecan rings. Sonic is apprehensive about dealing with more rings.

Synopsis[]

Several years in the past, Rosie and Julayla help Sally and King Acorn pack for their trip to the Floating Island. Sally is excited to spend some time alone with her father, but the king wrestles with his conscience: the true meaning of their trip is to try and find Elias and Queen Alicia, but he refuses to put the burden of a missing mother and brother on Sally's mind. They land their plane on the island, unaware that Knuckles is watching from the bushes nearby.

Sally is enamored by the island and wants to know all about it. Max asks her to explore on her own while he speaks to the Guardian of the island. Despite being upset about her father ignoring her to attend to business, Sally notices someone watching her in the bushes and demands that they show themselves. Knuckles introduces himself and they bond over their training for future duties. They start to argue about whose job will be harder—the leader of the Kingdom of Acorn or the Guardian of the Floating Island—and fight.

They trade hits and Sally accidentally knocks Knuckles over the edge of the island. She tries to lend him a hand, but he glides back to the island and tries to headbutt Sally. She dodges, causing Knuckles to knock over a tree. Hearing the noise, Locke calls for Knuckles. Knuckles fears that talking to Sally counts as breaking the rules of his Guardian training. Sally promises to hide and keep their meeting a secret. Knuckles agrees and both children are reunited with their parents. Sally and Max head off to explore the island while Knuckles watches from above, feeling that they will meet again someday.

Eve of Destruction[]

Synopsis[]

Several years ago, a young Sonic, Rotor, Antoine, and Sally roughhouse just outside of the Prower family's home in Mobotropolis. Amadeus tells the children to take their game elsewhere and asks his wife, Rosemary, to rest while he's on duty. Rosemary warns that their baby could be born any minute, but Amadeus insists that his duty to oversee the dismantling of the kingdom's military comes first. He goes on to explain that Julian Kintobor has been appointed as the new Minister of Science, filling the vacancy from Sir Charles' resignation after the Great War.

Amadeus bids his wife farewell and heads off to discuss the dismantling with Julian. Sonic spots him and rushes over, asking if he knows if their child will be a boy or a girl. He explains that he doesn't, but asks Sonic to keep an eye on the house in case Rosemary needs help. Meanwhile, Julian gloats about obtaining Sir Charles' lab and his plan to throw King Acorn into the Zone of Silence. He tests the Roboticizer with Snively, placing a citizen inside and roboticizing them. Amadeus happens into the lab at that very moment and confronts them both. Julian tells Amadeus about his plans and reveals his newest creation, the SWATbot, which grabs Amadeus.

Meanwhile, Rosemary goes into labor. Sonic and his friends load her on to Sally's wagon and take her to Dr. Quack. At Quack's office, the children and King Acorn meet the newborn Miles Prower, who they're surprised to find has two tails. King Acorn asks Quack where Amadeus is, when Julian, Snively and a disguised Amadeus enter the room. Rosemary introduced Amadeus to their son, but he doesn't say anything and walks away. Rosemary begins sobbing while Dr. Quack and King Acorn try to comfort her. Julian and Snively leave with the secretly roboticized Amadeus and plan their takeover for later that night. Rosemary falls asleep and Miles begins crying. Sonic takes the baby gives him a hug, cheering him up and promising to become fast friends.

Trivia[]

  • Rotor is seen playing Sonic Adventure on this issue's cover.
  • Sally is seen holding a Chun-Li doll on this issue's cover.
  • According to writer Ken Penders, this issue was originally meant to feature the debut of the "Knuckles: 20 Years Later" storyline. In addition to layouts for a potential cover being drawn, three fourths of the original script was completed, and layouts were drawn for the first twenty pages.[1]
    • Said plotline was later re-scheduled and planned for release in a later issue of Sonic Super Special. Due to the cancellation of the series following issue #15, however, the plot was ultimately scrapped in its entirety, but would provide heavy inspiration for the "Mobius: 20 Years Later" storyline taking place in Light Mobius.[2]
    • Ken Penders later announced plans to release the unused story in full as part of his "Knuckles Omnibus" collection, without involvement from Sega.[3]
