Eggman Gets a Gorilla

Synopsis

The story begins with Dr. Eggman showing off his newest robot: a highly detailed and over-imposing robot-mech he has dubbed "Mebot." Out of view, Sonic the Hedgehog asks Eggman what is behind him, but Eggman believes it it a trick to distract him. Sonic elaborates that he is asking about the background screen depicting a clear sky behind Mebot, which Orbot is rolling. Eggman explains that it is his anime battle background which was suggested by Eggfan91 on his website's message board. Unimpressed, Sonic takes advantage of Mebot's top heavy design and easily topples it with a Spin Dash. Eggman then flees in shame in an escape pod ejected from Mebot while Sonic laughs out loud at him.

Later, back at his lair, Eggman is on the internet and is disappointed (and confused) to see Eggfan91 berating and complaining about Mebot on his blog despite all the work he has done. Following a sequence of Eggman contemplating (and praising his past self), he deduces that he needs a new apporach as his robot warfare does not seem to work. He then decides to order a gorilla on the internet, whose hulking strength and aggression are just what he needs.

Four to six weeks later, Eggman has returned to his lair after a failure with Mebot 4.0 when Orbot and Cubot arrive with a crate. Having forgotten about his earlier plan, Eggman blames Cubot for this unexpected arrival and opens the crates to find Kyle the Gorilla. Remembering his plan, but having lost interest in it, Eggman tries giving Kyle an order, only for the gorilla to start beating him up and trashing his lair. Unable to stop Kyle, Eggman runs in terror to Sonic for help. Sonic, relaxing casually, wonders what Eggman has been doing when the scientist tries explaining himself. He thus hands him Sonic Boom #11 to show him what happened. Deadpanning after reading the issue, Sonic questions Eggman about the brilliance of his plan.

Begrudgingly, Sonic goes to Eggman's lair to handle Kyle, although he figures that having animal control for such situations in his universe would be an absurd hypocrisy. To his surprise though, he finds Kyle chilling out on the couch in front of the television. Kyle apologizes for the mess and introduces himself, explaining that he just flipped out from being in a crate for two days only to get ordered around. Sonic suggests to Kyle that they should get him home before Eggman returns, but Kyle notes that he was supposed to live in the lair since Eggman bought him. Sonic thus allows Kyle to stay in his shack for the time being. However Kyle turns out to be a troublesome moocher. In addition to being extremely clumsy, causing him to break much of Sonic's stuff (including his world balloons), he is also eating all Sonic's food and taking up all his "me" time. Sonic thus turns to Tails in his workshop to seek advice on what to do with Kyle. Tails, while working one a project, suggests that Sonic makes Kyle get a job since he lives under his roof and therefore has to follow his rules.

Sonic quickly puts Tails' plan into action. Kyle first gets a job as a stock clerk at a supermarket but ends up toppling a pile of cans. He then tries a gig as a stock broker, but he ends up uncovering illegal activities in a company. Kyle then finally gets a job as a window washer, but gets attacked by planes when cleaning a skyscraper, who completely misunderstood his intentions. Returning to Sonic's Shack, Kyle sinks down into a slump, feeling he is not good at anything. Sonic subsequently asks him if there is something which he always wanted to do. Kyle replies that he always loved comedy which literally gives Sonic an idea.

On the following installment of the Comedy Chimp Show, Comedy Chimp introduces Kyle as the newest addition to the show's talent team, named "Slapstick Gorilla." Here, Kyle's clumsiness fits in perfectly for the slapstick segments, one of which where Kyle ends up trashing a fabergé egg store (and the set) after tripping over a Smilebug. Meanwhile, Eggman is watching Kyle on television with Orbot and is loving his act. Wanting a similar gorilla, Eggman promptly orders Orbot to order him one, much to Orbot's silent frustration.

Trivia

  • The stylized design of Eggman's name in the headline for this story is the same design used for the logo-exclamation of Eggman's name used throughout the Sonic Boom comic series, such as in Sonic Boom #3.
  • When Eggman comes to Sonic after receiving Kyle in the mail, the logo on the cup Sonic is drinking from appears similar to that of the Sonic Drive-In chain (unrelated to the character himself).
  • The jukebox seen in Tails' Workshop is that same one seen in Sonic's Shack in the video game Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.
  • Kyle being circled by planes on top of a skyscraper is a references to the Empire State Building scene in the movie King Kong.

True Stories

Synopsis

In Dr. Eggman's lair, Dr. Eggman is looking desperately for a wireless earpiece he just bought and now has lost. After a sequence of himself looking everywhere (while advising himself at a future point), Eggman deduces he must have lost his earpiece while installing spy camera around the town today. He thus turns to his office and uses his cameras to see if anyone from Team Sonic has it.

Eggman first looks into Tails' workshop where he sees Tails working on what he believes to be a weapon. When Tails turns his jukebox on however, it turns out to be a Dance Instructor Bot, whom Tails merrily starts dancing with. Baffles by the sight, Eggman turns his attention to Amy in her house who appears to be practicing martial arts. When Eggman thinks he can study Amy's fighting style this way though, it turns out Amy is just trying to squash a Smilebug who is trolling her.

Deadpanning, Eggman looks into Sonic who is taking a nap. However, he is awoken by Kyle the Gorilla. Although Sonic just want to go back to sleep, Kyle convinces him to let him show him a new bit, which turns out to Kyle smashing a pie into Sonic's face. While Sonic does not find it funny, Eggman has a laugh about it. Eggman then spies on Knuckles while he trying to buy a hat. In the end, Knuckles is scammed into buying a pile of hats. His patience wearing thin, Eggman decides to look into Sticks, only for both of them to notice that each of them are spying on the other.

Having enough of all this stupidity, Eggman walks away in anger, only to step on the earpiece he had been looking for. Before Eggman can explode though, he instantly cools down when his doorbell rings, believing it to be the pizza he ordered. Instead, he finds a female gorilla and recalls he told Orbot to order one. Much like Kyle though, the gorilla instantly starts beating up Eggman while Orbot and Cubot watch. Meanwhile, a Smilebug is shown in the background who says "That's All Folks," concluding the Sonic Boom comic series.

Trivia

  • The fact that this would be the final issue of the Sonic Boom comic series was originally never stated when the solicit was first released.
  • With the release of this final issue, the Sonic Boom comic series is currently the shortest-running, Sonic-branded comic series ever published by Archie Comics, beating the Sonic Super Special spin-off series which had fifteen issues. However, the Sonic Boom Blast! columns and the last page in this issue say that the stories will continue in the Sonic Super Digest and Sonic Super Special Magazine series.
  • This is the only Sonic Boom comic issue to include two stories.
  • The drawings on this issue's introduction page mention the Bounce Pad, a gimmick from the video games Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal. It also depicts a soda can with a brown Chao on it, which may possibly be Chocola.
