For any Badniks that look similar to Antlion Mecha, please see Antlion (disambiguation).

The Antlion Mecha[note 1] (アリジゴクメカ[1] Arijigokumeka?) is the Master Robot of Under Ground Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit). It is a robotic antlion larva with giant mandibles built by Dr. Robotnik, and is the first boss of the game.

Description

Its intro is unusual: as Sonic jumps the final spring, he will fall into the lava. Then, Dr. Robotnik grabs him with a claw (the same one used to kidnap Tails) and sends him to a steep valley so that Sonic will be eaten by the Antlion Mecha's jaws.

The Antlion Mecha just moves its jaws while Robotnik drops cannonballs to finish off Sonic as he avoids its jaws. All Sonic has to do is avoid the cannonballs. The cannonballs damage the antlion, and its jaws move faster. As the Antlion Mecha's jaws move super fast, Dr. Robotnik charges at Sonic. If he avoided that, the Egg Mobile crushes the Antlion Mecha. As Robotnik makes his escape, Sonic leaves the valley and finds the Prison Egg.

The Antlion Mecha (known as the Egg Antlion) made an appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is one of the first generation Super Badniks, sent alongside Coconuts to challenge Sonic the Hedgehog to a brief brawl. Luckily, Sonic tricked Coconuts into dropping bombs towards Egg Antlion which destroyed the Super Badnik, leaving Sonic with no competition.[2]

Notes

  1. The name is a fan-localization of the Japanese name, which is the only one currently available.
