My name is Amy Rose. I'm cute and full of energy!

Amy Rose[1]

Template:Character Amy Rose (エミー・ローズ Emī Rōzu?), also formerly known as Rosy the Rascal (ロージー・ザ・ラスカル Rōjī za Rasukaru?), is a fictional, anthropomorphic pink hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She has a major long-standing crush on Sonic the Hedgehog, and has been trying to win his heart by any means since meeting him. Such methods included impressing him by fighting robots, and threatening to leave him locked in prison on Prison Island. Introduced in the game franchise in 1993, Amy was the first — and most recurring — female character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series and is also one of the most popular characters, coming in fifth place on an official popularity poll, being the most popular female character.[2]

She was described to be eight years old in Sonic CD, but from Sonic Adventure onward she has grown by four years. With the addition of Cream the Rabbit, Amy seems to have found herself a sidekick similar to how Tails is to Sonic (as implied in Sonic Battle, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Advance 3, and Shadow the Hedgehog).

Concept and Creation

File:150px-Amy Rose First Generation.png

Amy's original design in 1993.

Amy Rose is one of the few main characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series to have her first appearance outside the Sega games. She was created by Kenji Terada for the various Sonic the Hedgehog manga published by Shogakukan. She first appeared in the April 1992 issue of Shogaku Ninensei, written and illustrated by Sango Morimoto. She also appeared in the unrelated series from Shogaku Ichinensei, Shogaku Sannensei, Shogaku Gonensei, Shogaku Rokunensei, and Coro Coro Comics Special, all of which were written and illustrated by different mangaka but based on Kenji Terada's initial concept. In these series, Amy (no second name is given) is the girlfriend of Nicky, a nerdy young male hedgehog with the power to transform into the superhero, Sonic the Hedgehog. Amy is also the target of the bully Anton Verruca. Because of the vastly different styles of the illustrators for these series, Amy's design was different in each. She appeared most like her later games appearances in the Coro Coro Comics Specials, written and illustrated by Tanaka Kouichi.

In 1993, the manga character was adapted by the Sonic CD team to be used in Sonic's Mega CD debut. Her final design for this game was done by Kazuyuki Hoshino. She appeared infrequently thereafter, in ensemble spin-off games such as Sonic the Fighters, Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, and Sonic R. She did not appear in any of the early TV series, although she was included in most comics, including the Archie Comics series, the British Sonic the Comic and the French Sonic Adventures.

When Sonic Team reunited and started work on their three-dimensional follow-up to the classic Sonic games, Sonic Adventure, it was decided they would revive the pink hedgehog and give her a starring role in the game. Yuji Uekawa, the man who would redesign all the classic characters, did the most drastic changes to Amy. While Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all received minor design changes, Amy's clothing and hairstyle were completely revamped. She also had her entire figure redesigned to make her appear older, perhaps in an attempt to appeal to a different demographic than the rest of the Sonic characters.

Following Sonic Adventure, Amy became one of the main characters of the series, and has appeared in nearly every Sonic game since, as well as the TV series Sonic X.

History

Early Life

Not much is known about Amy's early history. Presumably, at some point in her life, Amy came to know about Sonic the Hedgehog, who became her biggest idol and love interest, with her eventually desiring to become his girlfriend and one day marry him. It is also known that she has always loved fortunes and other things mystical, and that she practiced in some of it herself using tarot cards.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD

Prior to the events of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Amy used her tarot cards to predict the future. From them, Amy learned that she was meant to have a "destined" encounter with Sonic on the small satellite known as Little Planet. Excited, Amy traveled to Never Lake where Little Planet would appear above for one month every year, and eventually made it to Little Planet herself.

After arriving on Little Planet, Amy was in Palmtree Panic when she finally came across Sonic for the first time. Upon seeing her idol, Amy was overtaken by love and could not help but excitedly grab onto her hero, though Sonic did not find her advances pleasing. From then on, Amy continued to follow Sonic, still smitten with him. When the pair arrived in Collision Chaos, however, Amy was captured by Metal Sonic, Dr. Ivo Robotnik's latest creation. Amy was then flown away with Metal Sonic, despite her struggles, and could do nothing but remain in Robotnik's captivity until she could be saved by Sonic.

Amy saved by Sonic from Little Planet

Amy having been brought back to Earth from Little Planet by Sonic.

Sometime later, Amy was brought to Metallic Madness, where she was tied to a mast. Fortunately, Amy was freed by Sonic after he defeated Metal Sonic in a race on Metallic Madness, and Amy thanked her rescuer by lovingly hugging him. Later, after Sonic defeated Robotnik and the doctor's base began to fall apart around them, Amy was carried through the crumbling structures by Sonic, not daring to look, and was safely brought back to Earth. When Amy dared to look again, she could only watch as Sonic ran away and freed Little Planet from its captivity. Though Sonic did not reciprocate her advances after their adventure, Amy's love for Sonic remained unshaken, and she was determined to win his affection.

Sonic R

Apparently following Sonic, Amy ended up joining two drift-racing competitions, both of which offered Chaos Emeralds as prizes. Driving a blue car, and later a red one, she competed in both races in an attempt to meet and impress Sonic.

Sonic the Fighters

A short while afterward, Dr. Robotnik planned to dominate the world from space, and Sonic’s friend, Miles "Tails" Prower, made a spaceship that only had one seat and required the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Wanting to use the ship, everyone who had an Emerald fought to gain the others, including Amy. She competed for the chance to defeat Robotnik and impress Sonic.

Sonic Adventure

Upon her eventual return to her home in downtown Station Square, Amy lived a normal life in Sonic’s absence. During this time, she also had a makeover; her green sweater and orange skirt were replaced by a sleeveless red dress with white trim, her blue-and-white shoes were substituted for red-and white boots, and she now sported a red hair band and golden rings around her wrists. Amy also styled her spines in a manner similar to an echidna, rather than wear them up, as they had been beforehand. It was while shopping and reminiscing about her times with Sonic that the Egg Carrier flew over the city, and a small blue Flicky fell out and knocked Amy over. Amy named it "Birdie" and soon, one of Dr. Eggman’s robots, E-100 "ZERO" Alpha, arrived and chased the two of them. Amy and Birdie escaped by hiding in the burger shop, and Amy decided to find Sonic and make him Birdie’s bodyguard for a short while.

When she found him outside of Casinopolis, Sonic was shocked to see her, and refused her request, which led Amy to say that she would "tag along" anyway. After fleeing Alpha again, the three ended up in Twinkle Park, where Amy and Birdie lost Sonic, after being chased. But as they escaped, the robot soon caught up with them, kidnapping and forcefully taking them to the Mystic Ruins, where Eggman picked them up and had Amy and Birdie locked in a cell. After managing to turn E-102 Gamma’s allegiance, the two fled through the Hot Shelter.

However, the pair were transported to the past, where they found themselves in the land of the Knuckles Clan, and watched Tikal with a group of Chao meeting Chaos. Returning to the present day, a somewhat-confused Amy and Birdie escaped to the flight deck, where Eggman was confronting Sonic and Tails. Although she was delighted to see them, Amy’s joy was short-lived when the Doctor grabbed Birdie and took a Chaos Emerald from the pendant he had been wearing. Eggman then called Gamma to destroy the intruders before fleeing himself. Sonic, Tails and Gamma were just about to finish off each other when Amy convinced them to stop. Sonic then told Tails to fly Amy away, which he did, just before the Egg Carrier lost altitude and exploded. Arriving in Station Square, Amy went to search for Birdie’s family, first in the Final Egg, and then the crash-landed Egg Carrier, where they were attacked by Alpha, who had hurt Birdie. Enraged, Amy attacked and destroyed the menacing robot. Birdie eventually found and returned to his family, who had been trapped inside of E-102 Gamma and E-101 Beta. As the birds flew off and Amy prepared to leave the Egg Carrier, she decided that she would not give up, and that someday she would make Sonic respect her.

Later, Amy returned to Station Square, which had been destroyed by Perfect Chaos. After Perfect Chaos had absorbed the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds and thrown them away, Amy grabbed one of them and brought it to Sonic, while Tails, Knuckles and Big the Cat brought the other six Emeralds. Together, they formed positive power through their caring for each other. Sonic tapped into this power and transformed into Super Sonic, and was able to defeat Perfect Chaos.

Sonic Shuffle

In Sonic Shuffle, Amy, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman were all summoned to Maginaryworld by Lumina Flowlight, who needed them to help repair the Precioustone. Each character had his or her own role to play, and with each other’s help, the Precioustone was repaired, Maginaryworld was saved, and the heroes were returned to Earth.

Sonic Adventure 2

Amy was an important supporting character in Sonic Adventure 2. Although not playable in the main story, she was playable in two-player mode. When Sonic was trapped on Prison Island, Amy somehow managed to arrive on Prison Island and accidentally stumbled upon Eggman, Shadow, and Rouge's plan to steal the Chaos Emeralds. She ended up cornered by Eggman as a consequence, but was saved at the last minute by Tails. With Tails' help, Amy managed to free Sonic—this is one of several times that Amy has saved Sonic, instead of the other way around. When she learned from Sonic that the reason why he was on Prison Island was because of the actions of a "fake hedgehog", she realized that he was referring to Shadow, and informed him of Shadow's allegiance to Eggman. She also briefly saw some writing on the wall of Sonic's cell, actually equations made by the former occupant of the cell, Professor Gerald Robotnik, to cause a catastrophic crash via the Space Colony ARK to destroy the planet as revenge for the death of Maria Robotnik, his granddaughter.

Because of the events of Sonic's escape, as well as her involvement in it, Amy was also targeted by G.U.N. to be arrested, even after Eggman's doomsday threat. She eventually was captured by Dr. Eggman on board the ARK. Eggman deduced that Sonic and Tails were carrying both a real and a fake emerald, and demanded the locations of the two while holding her at gunpoint. After luring them to the pinnacle area of the ARK and presumably killing Sonic via a rigged escape capsule, Amy broke down in tears, but was later relieved when learning that Sonic actually survived. She also managed to convince Shadow that Maria's true wish was for him to bring hope to humanity, not to seek revenge on them for her. Amy begged Shadow to help everyone, and he in turn ended up saving the world from the Biolizard, and later the Finalhazard.

Sonic Advance series

Sonic Advance

Amy was playable in Sonic Advance, but unlike the other playable characters, she could not spin and all of her attacks had to be triggered by a button press.

Sonic Advance 2

She was an unlockable character in Sonic Advance 2, after collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds with all four of the other characters. She had apparently engaged in some training, as she was able to spin jump and spin dash in this game.

Sonic Advance 3

She could also do this in Sonic Advance 3, but only if she was partnered with Sonic. If Amy is the leader, the partner behaves as she does in Sonic Advance.

Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, Amy is the leader of Team Rose, and the team's speed type leader. She is accompanied by Cream the Rabbit and Big the Cat, who want to find Chocola (Cheese's brother) and Froggy, respectively. Amy, however, simply wants to find Sonic and express her love. She and her team eventually confront Metal Sonic with Team Sonic, Team Dark, and Team Chaotix, after he copied all of their data. They also find out that Metal Sonic is the one who has kidnapped Chocola and Froggy.

Sonic Battle

Amy appears in Sonic Battle as a playable character. In the story, Amy comes and asks Tails about Emerl, and Tails explains that Emerl is like Sonic's child. Amy takes this literally and thinks that Sonic is testing her to see if she could handle taking care of a real child. Amy then takes Emerl away and tells him to call her his mother, thus making Emerl believe that Amy is his actual mother. Amy also chases after and fights Rouge when she steals Emerl for her own purposes.

Amy is often considered to be one of the stronger and more reliable characters in the game, since all of her attacks are fairly balanced, and contain a good mixture of speed and power, making her the third fastest character in the game. Her healing ability can quickly raise her HP.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Amy appeared alongside Sonic and the rest of the cast in Shadow the Hedgehog to try to convince Shadow to join their cause. Amy needs Shadow's help to rescue Cream and Cheese from Eggman's Cryptic Castle. No matter which mission the player chooses, after the stage is completed, Amy will assist the player in the fight against the Egg Breaker. Oddly enough, however, she does not appear in the cutscenes before or after the battle.

She later appears in the game's final story, where she attempts to dissuade Shadow from letting Black Doom get the Chaos Emeralds. After Shadow fulfilled Gerald Robotnik's original plans prior to his going insane, Amy expressed hope that Shadow survived as he is Shadow when Rouge questioned whether he survived. She also bore witness to Knuckles' chasing off Eggman.

Sonic Riders series

Sonic Riders

Amy is a playable character in Sonic Riders from the start. She is a speed type racer, and has stats equivalent to Sonic's and Jet's. She joins in the EX World Grand Prix because she wants to "keep her eye on Sonic".

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

File:Amy uses her gb.png

Amy on her Pink Rose

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, she finds one of the Arks of the Cosmos and, not knowing what it actually was, refused to hand it over to Jet. After being chased after by Storm, she throws it at his face and gets mad at him because he caused her to become lost. Amy forces him to lead her back to Sonic, but he ditches her when he finds a destroyed robot with another Ark of the Cosmos inside. She is then found by Sonic, and tells him that Storm mentioned the Gigan Rocks, a place where they could find information about the Arks.

Sonic Free Riders

Amy teams up with Cream and Vector in Sonic Free Riders in order to win the second EX Grand Prix and so she can see Sonic. In the Team Rose story, they must beat three teams in order to win the World Grand Prix. In the end, Amy celebrates her victory and rushes to Sonic, telling him he should go on a date with her because she won.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Amy appears in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and serves as an ally in Silver the Hedgehog's storyline. In this game, she mistakes Silver as Sonic. Learning that Silver was also looking for Sonic, she tries to enlist his help, not realizing Silver's true intentions on killing Sonic. Upon finding Sonic, Silver battles him and loses, but manages to catch Sonic off-guard afterward, and is able to hit him with a powerful blow, thus gaining the upper hand. However, Amy stops him from delivering the final blow. Amy also saves the damsel-in-distress Princess Elise—as well as Sonic—at one point in the story. She eventually found out that Silver didn't kill Sonic and that it was all part of Mephiles' plan to kill Sonic himself.

Amy can be played during the final level, End of the World, where she helps to revive Sonic by collecting one of the Chaos Emeralds. In the end, Solaris has been destroyed by Super Sonic, Super Shadow and Super Silver. Due to Solaris being erased from existence, therefore causing the events of the game to never happen, it is unknown if Amy remembers the events of the game.

Sonic Rivals

Amy also appears in Sonic's storyline in Sonic Rivals. In this game, Amy has been turned into a card by Doctor Eggman Nega and Sonic sets off to save both her and Tails. She also makes cameo appearances on three collectible cards.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Amy went with Sonic to save Knuckles—and later the world—from Imperator Ix. Early on in the story, Amy claims to Sonic that she has found a new boyfriend called Dexter and tries at many occasions to present him as a great boyfriend, but without going into much detail about him. Depending on the player's choices, Amy will reveal to Sonic that she just made him up in an attempt to make Sonic jealous.

It is revealed in this game that Amy has started a club for young girls to protect themselves from bullies. When the Voxai Overmind brainwashed her, she says "You never pay attention to me". Also, the player can engage in a romantic subplot between Sonic and Amy, which varies based on the player's conversation choices. She is the first unlockable character and the second playable character.

Sonic Unleashed

Maxresdefault

Amy is one of the few Sonic characters to appear in Sonic Unleashed. She made her introduction, as she did in Sonic Adventure 2's Dark Story and Silver's story in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), by hugging someone who looks like Sonic the Hedgehog. Although she hugged the right hedgehog this time, she didn't recognize Sonic due to him being in his Werehog form. She apologized, saying that she could have sworn it was him, and then ran off, causing Sonic to become depressed, as he is shown that he is not the same at all in his new form. Later, after Sonic saves her from some people possessed by Dark Gaia, he dashed away. However, it is implied that Sonic may not dislike her as much as he thinks.[3]

Amy later finds out about Sonic's new form, saying that although he's changed his look, he's still Sonic to her. She later helps out Professor Pickle, and in one cutscene, she talks about being interested in learning (Wii/PS2 version only). She follows Sonic, Tails, Chip, and Professor Pickle to Shamar. Sonic can talk to her between levels, just like before. At one point, she asks Sonic out on a date, and he can either agree or turn her down. She later strikes hope into Professor Pickle by showing unwavering faith in Sonic during his final battle. After the fact, Amy throws Sonic a "welcome home" party, which isn't actually shown, only mentioned.

Sonic Colors (DS)

Amy appears in the DS version of Sonic Colors as a non-playable character. She is excited to see Sonic again and asks him to complete a mission for her entertainment. When Sonic finishes it, Amy comments that it was "dreamy" and asks Sonic to marry her, causing Sonic to ditch her and leave the problem to Tails. Later, Amy finds Sonic with Big, and asks him to complete one more mission for her. After Sonic is done, Amy decides to have a picnic with him. Amy then screams in joy, saying, "Eating together in an Aquarium! We are so gonna date!" Tails comments on this, explaining that they were in the middle of Eggman's base.

Sonic Generations

Amy appears in the console version of Sonic Generations. Amy and the others were celebrating Sonic's birthday, but were captured by the Time Eater. Amy ends up in Chemical Plant as a statue. If Classic Sonic rescues her, Amy notices how Sonic looks "younger every day" and asks about his "secret", leaving him annoyed. If Modern Sonic rescues her, Amy says she was afraid that she would never be able to "flirt with him" again, leaving him exasperated. Later, at the Center of Time, she encouraged both Sonics, alongside Knuckles. After the final battle, Amy and the others returned to the present and continued celebrating. She congratulates Sonic for being "all great", as opposed to Knuckles' view of Sonic's performance as being "not half bad", comically smacking the red echidna backwards into a tree in the process. After this, she joins the other characters in saying goodbye to Classic Sonic and Classic Tails.

Amy also appears in a Chemical Plant mission where she helps Modern Sonic jump to higher places underwater with her Piko Piko Hammer. She also races against Classic Sonic in a Sky Sanctuary mission. She stands outside Chemical Plant, in the Hub World, giving Sonic tips on the stage as he walks by. She also appears as a trophy in the trophy room, and her classic form was released as DLC as an Xbox 360 avatar costume.

She gives three tests to Sonic: First, he must free the innocent people from King Arthur's dungeon. Second, he must show compassion to those in need, and finally, he must defeat King Arthur's Knights of the Underworld.

Nimue places a three-day time limit for the tests to be completed. On the third day, she disguises herself as a young child and asks Sonic to rescue her "parents" and the people from her village. He completes the test, but runs out of time. She reveals herself after he tells her everyone's okay. She states that he has shown courage, strength and compassion. Nimue then explains to Sonic that Caliburn, along with the swords of Sir Gawain, Sir Lancelot, and Dame Percival combined can stop Excalibur's immortality-giving ability. Nimue also appears as the kingdom is falling into darkness and tells Sonic and the three knights to place their swords in four shrines to create a barrier around Camelot Castle. After the game, Sonic, who has been taken back to his world, explains his journey to Amy Rose, who then complains that he is lying and forgot about their date and proceeds to attack him with her hammer, as My Sweet Passion plays. This may be the same date that Sonic could have agreed to during Sonic Unleashed, which is an optional scene towards the end of the adventure.

Appearances in Other Media

Sonic the Comic

Amy's appearance in Sonic the Comic.

Amy has appeared in the UK publication Sonic the Comic, in which she was a level-headed and pragmatic member of the Freedom Fighters—when she wasn't claiming to be Sonic's girlfriend. She also became the leader of the team while Sonic was trapped in the Special Zone. She was close friends with Tekno the Canary, and she used a crossbow in battle—rather than the Piko Piko Hammer that eventually became her trademark in the games.

Archie Comics

Amy's appearance in the Archie Comics.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics by Archie Comics, Amy is from the country of Mercia and has a cousin named Rob O' the Hedge. As in other continuities, she has a crush on Sonic.

In her earliest appearances, she attempted to become a member of the Freedom Fighters, but was rejected frequently because of her young age. She then made herself older by wishing on the Ring of Acorns, but was still denied by Sally since she still had the mind of a younger girl. Eventually, however, Amy did advance enough to be accepted as a Freedom Fighter, and became an important member of the team.

Sonic Adventures

Sonic Adventures was a two-volume, French-made comic book published by Sirène, that was released in 1994. Amy appears in the first volume—"Sonic Adventures: Dans Les Griffes De Robotnik"—being kidnapped by Robotnik as bait to get Sonic. This version of Amy has the same design as in Sonic CD.

Sonic X

Main article: Amy Rose (Sonic X)
File:011amy.jpg

Amy in Sonic X anime.

Amy is one of the main characters in Sonic X, an anime series which is the most recent of the Sonic the Hedgehog TV shows. This is her first appearance in a Sonic TV series, as she did not appear in any of the other three American-produced series.

In Sonic X, Amy is Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend. Much the same as in the game series, her long-term goal is to get him to notice, love and respect her. She gets mad at Sonic's impatience and aloof attitude, which occasionally are so bad that she is driven to violence. However, she really does care about him and doesn't want him to get hurt. Likewise, Sonic seems closer and more comfortable with Amy in the anime, even going so far as to bring her flowers and say he cares for her in one episode. Amy also has romantic daydreams about her and Sonic. Overall, her personality is more temperamental, bossy, annoying, and stubborn than in the games; she may threaten or even harm her friends for things they had nothing to do with, but she still has the same kind heart that she possesses in the games.

Sonic X (comics)

Amy Rose's role in the Sonic X comic is similar to hers in the Sonic X anime. In the comic book version, her relationship with Sonic is developed more closely, with Sonic even taking her on a date for Valentine's Day, although this was due to him having lost a bet with Knuckles. He seemed to enjoy himself, however, when Amy asked him if he would ever take her on a date again, Sonic answered "Er... Maybe?"

Personality

Amy profile SG

Amy's profile in Sonic Generations.

Amy in the main series is presented as being somewhat kind and girly. In Sonic CD, she was referred to as an "optimistic tomboy" who loves fortunes and uses tarot cards. Because of her tomboyish nature, she became a playable character as a fighter in Sonic the Fighters. However, after Sonic Adventure, Amy had grown a more feminine personality, such as an interest in shopping and fashion, but that didn't remove her tomboyish nature. However, in the later games, she has the personality of a girly-girl more so than a tomboy unlike the earlier games. In the more recent games, Amy has become a bit more obsessive and far more aggressive, much to Sonic's dismay. She often shows her anger by pulling out her Piko Piko Hammer out of Hammerspace, sometimes threatening Sonic with it.

In Sonic Battle, her attraction towards "Boxercise" plays to both elements of her ever-changing personality: the exercise helping her lose weight to maintain her girlish figure, and the boxing to help her train when she's forced to fight. In Sonic Battle, she had shown a very powerful and aggressive attitude, willing to fight whenever necessary.

Despite her aggressive tendencies, Amy has a good heart, never gives up, and is one of the most optimistic and cheerful characters. Amy is always full of hope and is always cheering on for the good side of things. She almost never seems to find anything hopeless, as shown in Sonic Adventure, where she was determined to help the Flicky who had lost his family.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Amy felt strongly that there was a chance for the world to be saved and that people were basically good (as she told Shadow). Amy is often likable person she has rarely met anyone who she did not befriend (including Shadow and Blaze). Amy is a cheerful and caring individual, with a positive outlook on life, and an over sweeping infatuation for Sonic.

Since 2010, after the release of Sonic Free Riders, Amy seems to be more bossy and infatuated with Sonic than before. This is most likely due to the more light and humorous nature of recent Sonic games. Amy's personality has added more a humorous factor in games like Sonic Colors, Sonic Free Riders, and Sonic Generations with her obsession for Sonic, which causes her to say silly and embarrassing things.

Abilities and Powers

Piko Piko Hammer

Main article: Piko Piko Hammer

Amy's trademark weapon is the Piko Piko Hammer, a large and durable hammer that she is able to call out from nowhere at will, and is Amy's preferred means of offense. Though simple in function, Amy can wield the Piko Piko Hammer rather skillfully and utilize it in plenty of ways, such as spinning it around to form a top, slamming it down on foes, swinging it around offensively while flipping, increasing its size or even have it mimic other attack techniques such as the variants of the Spin Attack. Even powerful figures such as Sonic and Knuckles gest worried and even  afraid when Amy pulls out her Piko Piko Hammer, hinting the danger that this weapon poses.

Physical Abilities

In terms of physical attributes, Amy is not exactly gifted with physical abilities on a superhuman level, such as other characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Despite this, however, Amy does possess above average physical capabilities, making her a powerful character in her own right.

While not strictly superhuman, Amy does possess a high degree of physical strength. She is able to wield her Piko Piko Hammer, which appears to weigh quite a bit, with little effort, and can swing her Piko Piko Hammer around with enough force to smash clean through the armor of Eggman's robots and send enemies sky rocketing. She even has enough strength to swing her Piko Piko Hammer around so fast that she can ascend into the air like a helicopter rotor or generate shock waves and whirlwinds, and as well to provide enough force with her Piko Piko Hammer to send herself into the air by hammering it into the ground. On top of that, in Sonic Generations, when Amy accidentally hits Knuckles, she hits him with enough force to send him flying backwards into a nearby tree without even noticing.

Like most characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Amy is able to run at super speeds, which stem from her innate hedgehog abilities and her practice from chasing after Sonic. Though her top speed while running is unclear, she can run at fast enough to keep Sonic, who is the fastest character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, on a constant lookout for her while escaping her, hinting that Amy possesses a high level of running speed.

Amy has as well good acrobatic skills and agility, being able to handle and swing her large Piko Piko Hammer gracefully and without disturbing her path when airborne, perform various forms of movements and tricks when launched into midair, and grind on rails with ease.

Combat Skills

Though kind and optimistic, Amy is a tough and powerful fighter. Combined with her aggressive approach when provoked, Amy can be a fierce opponent in a confrontation. Though she has not received much training in martial arts, reminiscing more of exercises, Amy knows how to defend herself against, and can go up against powerful robots and even highly trained combatants such as the Nocturnus Clan soldiers.

Fighting Style

Amyspin

Amy attacks using her Piko Piko Hammer.

Amy's fighting style is heavily based on the usage of her Piko Piko Hammer. In battle, Amy uses her Piko Piko Hammer's size and durability to her advantage, either swinging her hammer into the opponent and knocking the opponent a great distance away through midair, or bringing the entirety of her hammer's weight down on the opponent in a downward swing, crushing her opponents with devastating force. When launching more offensive or effective moves, Amy will swirl around with her Piko Piko Hammer, turning herself into a spinning top that mows down everything she comes into contact with or even stir up whirlwinds and shock waves to send opponents flying, though such maneuvers can leave her dizzy.

Despite preferring to use her Piko Piko Hammer when fighting enemies, Amy can as well fight opponents hand-to-hand in direct combat, though she rarely resorts to this method. As seen in Sonic Battle, when fighting opponents close up, Amy will resort to kickboxing moves, using fast jabs and uppercuts to hit her opponents.

Techniques and Moves

Amy has one of the widest ranges of moves and techniques in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, ranging from techniques involving her Piko Piko Hammer, to the basic Spin Attack maneuvers, to even mimicries of other characters' moves.

Most of Amy's offensive techniques revolves around the variants of her primary offensive technique, the Hammer Attack, a downward swing with her Piko Piko Hammer on opponents. These variants serve to compensate for Amy's lack of superior physical skills and moves. Her Jump Attack lets her swing her Piko Piko Hammer in midair to attack enemies while airborne with increased attack range, and her Spin Hammer Attack and Hammer Whirl lets her spin around with her Piko Piko Hammer to attack with increased attack range. For better movements, Amy can use her Hammer Jump and Mid-Air Hammer Jump techniques to let her somersault higher into the air by setting off with her Piko Piko hammer from where she is positioned, and with her Propeller Hammer she can float through the air like a helicopter for a short while.

Some of Amy's more special moves include her Tornado Hammer where she throws a whirlwind at opponents to blow them off the ground, and the Rose Typhoon where she creates a dome-like shock wave by hammering into the ground. While she sometimes lacks it, Amy can also perform the various forms of the Spin Attack, which is a variation on the tendency for hedgehogs to roll into tight balls for protection. The Homing Attack allows Amy to jump and home in on an enemy to get over large gaps she cannot normally reach, the Spin Jump lets her curl into a ball to attack opponent by landing on them, and the Spin Dash lets her shoot herself forward as an acceleration roll at high speeds to break barriers or mow down enemies.

Miscellaneous Skills

Amy has on several occasions proved to possess excellent tracking and searching skills, especially when she is looking for Sonic. As demonstrated during her searches for Sonic, Amy is able to, through a mix of dowsing and just plain searching, locate the general area of the person that she is looking for, no matter where in the world it is. In fact, at least in Sonic's case, Amy is able to "feel" that the person she is looking has been in a certain location. Amy's tracking skills are further enforced in Sonic Rush, where Cream told Blaze that Amy was sure to find Sonic for them.

Amy has as well displayed some skills in the mystical field, primarily in reading tarot cards. Using her tarot cards, Amy is able to predict the future and give herself knowledge of future events, such as successfully predicting where Sonic would be in Sonic the Hedgehog CD and Sonic Battle, and even curse others.

In Sonic the Fighters, Amy demonstrated the ability to harness Chaos Energy from the Chaos Emeralds, allowing her to enter the Hyper Mode.

Amy also has good culinary skills, making her a capable cook.

Though not necessarily a special skill or ability, Amy's positive outlook and attitude gives her the ability to convince even the most cold-hearted and cruel people into giving up on their evil ways through genuinely heart-spoken speeches, as seen in the cases of Shadow the Hedgehog and E-102 Gamma.

In the Sonic Riders series, Amy has steadily proven herself as a very talented Extreme Gear rider. Though she did not make it to the finals during the first EX World Grand Prix in Sonic Riders, she had at the time of the Grand Prix in Sonic Free Riders become so skilled at riding Extreme Gear that she was able compete against even the world's best Extreme Gear riders. While riding on an Extreme Gear, Amy is skillful enough to ride on rails, focus on opponents while remaining in control of her Extreme Gear, and as well pulls off highly advanced tricks and techniques on her Extreme Gear while in midair.

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

Most of Amy's life (since Sonic CD onwards) is spent following Sonic the Hedgehog, whom she is madly in love with. While Sonic seems perturbed and annoyed by her affections, she has not given up and goes through great lengths to impress him. Even though he seems nervous and occasionally overcome by her advances, Sonic still considers Amy a friend and is always there to help her out if needed. Being rejected and ignored by Sonic does not seem to hurt Amy, in fact, she sees and treats him like he does love her too. Throughout the games, since their meeting, Amy has been chasing Sonic and tries to be romantic with him, which creeps him out and causes him to run away.

In Sonic Battle, in Amy's story, Amy asks Tails about Emerl, and Tails explains that Emerl is like Sonic's child even though Emerl was just a friend of Sonic. Amy takes this literally and thinks that if Sonic is Emerl's father and wants her to be the mother, and that he is testing her to see if she could handle taking care of a real child. Amy then takes Emerl away and tells him to call her his mother, thus making Emerl believe that Amy is actually his mother. During her story she tries hard to protect Emerl after losing him to Rouge. At the end of her story, Amy tries to get Sonic to propose to her, but he bails. Amy assumes that Sonic simply got cold feet and none of the surrounding characters tell her the truth as they fear her anger.

In Sonic Riders, Amy enters the EX World Grand Prix so she can be beside Sonic, though she becomes mad when Sonic accidentally launches her into a tornado when he had to save her from Dr. Eggman and forgot about her. After getting caught in the tornado, she chases Sonic with her Piko Piko Hammer as payback for forgetting about her.

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Amy tries to make Sonic jealous by making up her new boyfriend named Dexter. The player can choose whether Sonic believes it or not. If so, she will tell him that Dexter is fake. The player can also engage in an optional romantic sub-plot between Sonic and Amy. One possible outcome is Sonic revealing that he does have feelings for her, but they promise to put it on hold and figure it out after their adventure. [citation needed]

In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic seemed depressed when Amy didn't recognize him as a Werehog, understanding that he isn't the same at all in his Werehog form when Chip pointed it out. When she finds out the Werehog was Sonic, she wanted to know all about how it happened, and had even mentioned that, though Sonic looks better in the day time, she doesn't care about that. In one point in the game, she asks Sonic out on a date and the player can choose whether Sonic accepts or declines it.

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Amy's time is spent mostly trying to find Sonic. She teams up with Silver in order to find him, though when she finds out that he is trying to kill him, she ditches him, saying that she'd choose Sonic over the entire world. Later on during the Last Story, everyone gets sent to a time-space rift. They all see that Sonic is dead, and Amy reacts to this by kneeling down and crying into her hands.

In Sonic and the Black Knight's ending, Sonic was explaining to Amy about his adventure in the Arthurian Legend. Amy does not believe him and said, "That's the lamest excuse ever! You just forgot about our date!" Sonic tries to reason out saying that he swears that it was true, but Amy doesn't listen and pulls out her hammer.

In Sonic Colors (DS), Amy tries to have a romantic picnic with Sonic at first; however, Sonic was too busy and didn't want to make the picnic look like a date. Later on, with Big and Tails around, he does agree since he is hungry and it doesn't look like a date. Amy also gives Sonic a mission, because he looks "dreamy" when he performs his tricks in stages.

In Sonic Generations, Amy is excited to attend Sonic's birthday. However Sonic keeps Amy away from getting too close to him (such as hugging him) by placing his hand over her face. If Classic Sonic rescues Amy, Amy mistakes him for the present form of Sonic and questions on how he looks so young, whereas if the present Sonic saves Amy, she tells Sonic that she was afraid that she would never be able to flirt with him again, leaving Sonic annoyingly exasperated. If Sonic gets an S rank in Chemical Plant, Amy will compliment that Sonic "knows how to get the girls", and when attaining a Red Star Ring, Amy says that she mistook the ring for an actual ring, meaning that she thought Sonic was giving her a ring for a gift or for a marriage proposal.

A running gag involves Amy makes her entrance in a game by running into other hedgehogs from the left of the screen and hugging them from behind, mistaking them for Sonic.

Cream the Rabbit

Cream the Rabbit is Amy's best friend. Since Sonic Heroes, Cream and Amy are portrayed as best friends and they share a sister-like relationship, comparable to Sonic and Tails' brother-like friendship. This fact is strengthened by Sonic Advance 3, as when they are paired together, they are given the title "Team Jubilee" and serve as a female counterpart to Sonic and Tails' "Unbreakable Bond." The two also seem to frequent together almost completely throughout Sonic Battle, except when Emerl drags one of them away. Amy is also seen searching for Cream during the level Cryptic Castle in Shadow the Hedgehog, which further suggests how much she cares for her. Another suggestion is in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. when you go to recruit Cream she says "You poor thing! What are you doing out here?".

In Sonic Rush, it is implied that Amy occasionally gets angry with Cream, angry enough to chase her with her hammer as Cream shouted "Not again!" after she said that Amy was "shortsighted" in the regard of her love of Sonic when Cream introduced Blaze to Amy.

The two team up twice in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood for the moves Spin Cycle, the equivalent of Sonic and Tails' Blue Bomber move in which Cream lifts Amy up and sends her spinning into one enemy, as well damaging adjacent ones. Team Rose band together to perform Flower Power, their most potent attack in this game which involves Amy bouncing off Big with a boost from Cream and landing on a foe hammer-first.

In recent games such as Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations, Amy seems to be distancing herself from Cream. She is often seen around other characters, such as Blaze, but she still remains close to Amy in Sonic Free Riders, but not quite as a sidekick.

Big the Cat

Big the Cat is most likely Amy's other best friend. They fight together in Sonic Heroes, forming Team Rose. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood after meeting Big in the Mystic Ruins, Big states that he "heard his good friend Amy Rose" so he rushed over to see if it was really her. When Big sees Amy he becomes ecstatic and actually makes an attempt to hug her (in which Amy refuses due to the fact that he smelled from the gases in the ruins). Also, if you agree to let Big join your party he, again, becomes happy that he gets to be around Amy. Big acts like an older brother to Amy.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Tails and Amy rarely interact with each other. In games like Sonic Battle and Sonic Free Riders, Tails tries helping Sonic get away from Amy.

In Sonic Battle, he mistakenly tells Amy that Sonic is treating Emerl like a son which lead her to believe that Sonic wants her to be Emerl's mother.

In Sonic Riders, Amy is defensive of Tails when Wave makes fun of him.

Knuckles the Echidna

Amy has only been seen interacting with Knuckles the Echidna on rare occasions.

In Sonic Heroes when playing as Team Sonic; at the beginning of the fight against Team Rose, Knuckles will side with Amy and say, "Have you been messing with that girl's heart again Sonic?"

In Sonic Rush, Amy stops Knuckles from starting a fight with Blaze.

In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Amy budges in Knuckles' sentence in the end, annoying the echidna. However Knuckles is also seen protecting Amy and pulls her away out of danger in the MeteorTech Premises.

In Sonic Generations, Amy accidentally hurts Knuckles with a great force (which causes him to crash into a tree) after he said that Sonic "wasn't half bad", whereas she thought he was "all great". However, Amy does not notice how hard she hit Knuckles because she was busy swooning at Sonic.

Shadow the Hedgehog

In Sonic Adventure 2, they interact twice. Amy first meets Shadow when she mistakes him for Sonic and hugs him from behind. When Amy senses the lack of a reaction, she releases him, causing him to glance back at her. Amy demands his name when she realizes that he is not Sonic, but he continues to watch her quietly. After Amy notices Dr. Eggman, she also realizes the mistake she's made, and runs off screaming. During this, Shadow takes a step after her, but Dr. Eggman stops him.

Later in the game aboard the ARK, Amy meets Shadow again and this time does her part in helping by begging Shadow to save the world. At first, Shadow simply replies, strangely in a non-threatening way, that it is pointless, but then Amy points out that despite people sometimes being selfish, they were still inwardly good and that saving them was right. Shadow suddenly has a flashback of Maria begging Shadow to make people happy. Shadow then comes to his senses he goes off to fight the Biolizard, telling Amy that he has to keep his promise to Maria and her.

Amy was also the only one to see Shadow's tear after he remembered Maria's promise, making her the only person to see him cry in Sonic Adventure 2. Amy and Maria have the same insight towards humanity, thus this might be one of the reasons Shadow is nice to her, since it's unknown whether or not Shadow remembers Amy's deed in ARK.

During Sonic Battle, Amy is angered by Rouge, who wasn't answering her question as to why Shadow is in her house.

During Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow can choose to assist Amy Rose in helping find Cream and have her fight alongside the player in the boss battle. Regardless, at the end of stage, Shadow benevolently advises, "If you wanna stay clear of trouble, then stay away from that Doctor." In the final ending, Amy shows an amount of faith and admiration for Shadow, regardless of anything bad that may have happened.

Vector the Crocodile

Amy and Vector encountered each other in Sonic Heroes. When the Chaotix saw Team Rose, Vector wanted to ask Amy a question, however her rude response caused the teams to fight.

The next time the two were seen together was in Sonic Free Riders. Vector joined Amy's team along with Cream to win the prize money Eggman advertised about his Grand Prix. Vector and Amy do not seem to get along. At first, Amy blames Vector for not getting them registered for the race even when he claimed that it was not his fault as she invited him to her team 30 minutes ago. Also, when Amy pretends that she wasn't expecting her and Sonic in the Grand Prix (because she wanted to prove that "lovers" are drawn together) Vector disapproves her by calling her a "terrible actress". Amy also appears to yell at Vector and boss him around, something she does not do to Cream throughout the game, even though Cream is also a member of the team.

Reception

A Games Radar article called Amy's introduction "the only bitter taste" in Sonic CD, but added that she's "just a pink hedgehog here and not a whiny, annoying brat like in Sonic Adventure." [5] In an IGN article entitled "Smash It Up", Lucas M Thomas stated that "one of the coolest things about Amy Rose's character is her enormous, walloping hammer" that is often used for comedy in the series. [6]

Amy is overall very well received by fans, and is considered to be one of the series "Top 10" characters, as evidenced by popularity polls. She has tied with Knuckles for fourth place being the most popular female over all.[citation needed] Amy is so far three of the only females to have a figure made by Jazwares, with the other figures being Wave the Swallow and Blaze the Cat.

Trivia

  • In the Sega CD release of Sonic CD in America, Amy was referred to as "Princess Sally" in the game manual, possibly to connect her to the Sonic animated television series released that same year. However, the Sally that showed up in the cartoons was not Amy. Subsequent re-releases of Sonic CD jettison any references to Amy being named Sally. Interestingly, she was clearly stated as "Amy" in the earlier European manual for Sonic CD.

  • Amy's concept outfit for Sonic Riders appears to give her pink fingers, although her gloves may have been fur-colored rather than fingerless.
  • Amy has always called her Piko Piko Hammer just "my hammer", but in her co-op mission in Sonic Generations, she calls it "my Piko Piko Hammer", this being the first time she has called it by its full name, as well as the first time it has ever been called its full name correctly. (In Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing the Announcer calls it "The Piko Hammer".)
  • Amy's bio in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood calls her Amy Rose the Hedgehog.
  • Amy was the first female character introduced in the game series as well as the only female hedgehog of the series.

Amy in Sonic the Fighters with her Piko Piko Hammer

  • In Sonic R, Amy is one of two characters who races in a vehicle rather than on foot. The other is Doctor Robotnik.
  • In Sonic the Fighters, Amy's Piko Piko Hammer looks different from the one that is shown in the more recent games, probably due to the fact that it was the hammer's first appearance (not counting Tails' use of a similar hammer in Tails Adventure).
  • If Sonic the Fighters is to be believed, Amy Rose did not wear panties in the classic era - harmless pink fur covers her body underneath her skirt. This was not changed in the HD release.
  • In Sonic Riders, Amy sports a different, racing outfit throughout the game, but in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Amy wears her usual dress in the story cutscenes and in the story level where she races Storm. However, in the Single and Multiplayer modes, she wears the same outfit that she wore in Sonic Riders.

  • In the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Sonic Unleashed , Sonic makes a reference to Amy after defeating the Dark Guardian in Shamar, when he says, "I know little girls who are better with a hammer than you! Well, one anyway."
  • Ironically, in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, despite being the speed leader of Team Rose, Amy's attack is slower than other speed leaders like Sonic and Shadow. She is also the strongest attacker of her team, despite Big being the power leader.

  • All of the cars Amy has driven in racing games have been old-fashioned convertibles, similar to how Sonic has driven sports cars and how Knuckles drives off-roaders.
  • Amy's last name, Rose, can be considered a play on words. A rose is a very beautiful flower that is connected with love, but has sharp thorns on it as well. This can be related to her connection to love and her short fiery temper. It is also a play on her color, because in French, rose translates to pink, her fur color.
  • In the Mario & Sonic series, Amy is the only playable female character who is not a princess.
