Altar Emerald (アルターエメラルド Arutā Emerarudo?) is the eighth Zone of Sonic Advance 3. The player immediately travels to it after defeating the Egg Gravity and clearing Chaos Angel. Once this Zone has been reached, it can be accessed again via Chaos Angel's Zone Map by moving just a bit further past the Boss Capsule and finding the Final Zone Ring.
It is the final Zone of the game for most character combinations but if the player replays Altar Emerald with Sonic as the leader and they have collected all of the Chaos Emeralds, they can progress on to Nonaggression.
Description[]
Altar Emerald takes place in front of the Master Emerald altar on Angel Island. The level consists of the ground pavements whose design features a pattern of wavy outlines alternating betwen one with a turquoise W and the other a red V. Tall pillars with some of the triangles colored with either turquoise or red.
The sky in the background is onimously colored marroon, giving a red, orange, yellow tint to the clouds.
Story[]
The heroes have cornered Eggman and Gemerl who make their last stand on Angel Island. Gemerl first confronts the heroes and despite being more powerful compared to their previous encounter, Gemerl is defeated and retreats towards the Master Emerald's altar. From there, Eggman battles the heroes with the Hyper Eggrobo. However, the mech was defeated prompting both Eggman and Gemerl to retreat. The lead character then attacks Eggman's Egg Mobile causing him to drop while Gemerl follows the scientist. The heroes meet up back at the Master Emerald's altar with their other friends where the sacred gem emits a bright light, restoring the planet to its original state and numerous Flickies fly by. With the heroes being content with the world being back to normal, Omochao appears who snaps a picture of the heroes.
Gameplay[]
Altar Emerald is a boss level; instead of a full-length platforming level, it is a simple straight path with two back-to-back boss fights (with Rings). Said bosses are Gemerl and the Hyper Eggrobo.
Bosses[]
Gemerl[]
The first boss of Altar Emerald is Gemerl. During this battle, Gemerl will attack the player with full-body charges, missile barrages in two different formations, or launch surprise attacks by teleporting into the middle of the field and then charge at the player. To damage Gemerl, the player must attack him when he lets his guard down. After four hits he will be defeated.
Hyper Eggrobo[]
The second and final boss of Altar Emerald is the Hyper Eggrobo, piloted by Dr. Eggman. The player will need to constantly avoid the mech's hand attacks including one that can remove the floating platforms; falling into the gap will prompt the player to lose a life. To damage this boss, the player must attack Eggman's cockpit which can be usually done when the Hyper Eggrobo fires bombs that move around the area; the player can jump on these bombs and from there, they can reach Eggman.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, the Altar Emerald makes an appearance. Cream the Rabbit recalls the Altar Emerald was the site where Sonic once fought Gemerl.[1]
Trivia[]
