The Akatento[1] (赤テント[2] Akatento?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, ladybug-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman, as well as a variant of the Moto Bug.
Appearance[]
The Akatentos are based on ladybugs. They have round and red body armor, much like Moto Bugs, but with black spots similar to ladybugs, and gray edges. They also have wide and cartoony black eyes, yellow bodies, and a yellow tailpipe. Like Moto Bugs, the Akatentos mode of transportation is a single black wheel underneath their bodies. However, unlike Moto Bugs, they do not have arms.
Game appearances[]
Sonic Advance 3[]
The first appearance of the Akatentos were in Sonic Advance 3, where they appear as enemies. They are only encountered in Route 99.
In gameplay, Akatentos behave more simply than Moto Bugs, as they will not even chase the playable character if they spot them. Rather, they only move backwards and forwards within a certain area without stopping; therefore, the only way to get hit by an Akatento is to touch it accidentally. Otherwise, they pose no threat. The player can easily take them out with a simple attack, like a Spin Jump or a Spin Attack. Upon their defeat, the Akatentos release a Ring, but they will not award the player any points.
Other game appearances[]
Sonic Jump series[]
Sonic Jump[]
In Sonic Jump, the Akatentos appear as enemies. In this game, they only appear in Jungle Zone. In gameplay, the Akatentos only fly left and right. In order to destroy an Akatento, the player must jump into it from below; touching an Akatento while falling will cause Sonic to take damage.
Sonic Jump 2[]
In Sonic Jump 2, which serves as a remaster of its prequel, the Akatentos appear as enemies in the same location and behave in the same way as in their previous appearance.
Powers and abilities[]
Akatento are some of Dr. Eggman's weakest Badniks. In addition, they are not equipped with any means of defense.
Variants[]
Aotento[]
The Aotento is a blue variant of the Akatento. Design-wise, they are exactly the same as the Akatentos, except that they have blue armor instead of red. Like the Akatentos, they appear in Sonic Advance 3.

Books and comics[]
IDW Publishing[]
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, a group of Akatentos were gathered at Tails' Workshop for an experiment by Sonic, Tails and Belle. There, Belle would transfer Motobud's nonaggression subroutine over to the Akatentos using the Miles Electric. When Tails then unveiled Sonic in front of the Akatentos, these Badniks would mind their own business in pleasant ways, making the trio's experiment a success. Later at night, however, the Akatentos received a beacon signal that compelled them to head to Eggperial City.[3]
Sometime later, Akatentos were among the many Badniks that attended Orbot and Cubot's Winter Jam reality show.[4]
Trivia[]
- "Aka" means "red" in Japanese, whilst "tentō" is derived from "tentōmushi", the Japanese word for "ladybug".
