Action Chain Challenges[1] (アクションチェインチャレンジ,Akushon Chein Charenji?) are challenges found across all Open-Zone areas in Sonic Frontiers, with the exception of Rhea Island and during The Final Horizon. During these Challenges, the players are tasked with raising their "chains" counter, which can be increased by doing different actions across the Starfall Islands within the Time Limit. By performing "chains", Sonic's score will also be increased. After the timer runs out, the player will be rewarded a Rank based on their score, ranging from a D-Rank to an S-Rank. Completing all Action Chain Challenges with an S-Rank will reward the player with the ability to use the Spindash.[2]
In Sonic Frontiers, Action Chain Challenges are scattered across all Starfall Islands, except Rhea Island and during The Final Horizon. They are started by Cylooping tall, white signs, similar to those marking regular Challenges, emitting green particles with purple details from the ground. Before completing the respective Action Chain Challenges, a timer will be displayed on the sign, being replaced by the highest Rank the player achieved at that Challenge after finishing it. There are a total of 40 Action Chain Challenges in the game, with 10 on each islands.
After Sonic Cylooped the sign, a countdown will be displayed on the screen, which will start the Action Chain Challenge. On the left side of the screen, the number of "chains" will be displayed, while on the top middle side, the timer, the score multiplier, the score and the current Rank will be showed. The player is also able to restart or quit at any time.
In order to increase the score, the player will have to perform "chains", which includes different actions such as collecting Rings, attacking enemies and interacting with certain gimmicks in the Open-Zone areas. During the event, yellow orbs will appear across the island. Each action will reward the player a certain number of points. A score multiplier is also present during these Challenges. It can be increased by filling the bar on the top of the screen performing "chains", doubling each time. Its maximum limit is 256. If the player doesn't make any "chains" for some time, the bar will be emptied.
After the timer runs out, the player will be rewarded with a Rank based on their score counter, ranging from D-Rank to S-Rank. Earning an S-Rank on every Action Chain Challenge will reward the player with the ability to use the Spindash.[2] It is also a requirement for obtaining the "Frontier Elite" outfit.
