Sonic Frontiers 1-1 |
โ | Next stage >> |
Portal 1-1 or simply 1-1, is the first Cyber Space stage in Sonic Frontiers. It is also the starting point of the game after first cinematic cutscenes. The player is rewarded with maximum of seven Vault Keys in the Open Zone field after clearing all four missions in the Cyber Space stage.[1]
Description[]
1-1 shares the basic Cyber Space theme along other stages, while presenting floating chunks of islands based on Green Hill Zone, specifically taken from the specific depiction from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. As such, all chunks of floating islands have brown checker patterned soils with light green grass. Majority of islands also contain various flowers and palm trees adorning them, blue rocky blocks and totem poles of various types and sizes. Many familiar elements such as giant loops and corkscrews are present as well. In the lane of linear pathways can be spotted sharp green bushes with red flowers and small wooden fences.
Much like other Cyber Space stages, many half-pipe lines and chunks of cubes are seen in far distance of the blue background with rapid, blue digitized sparks being spotted on the screen during the gameplay to represent the digitized atmosphere of the stage.
Portal location[]
The entrance Portal to the Cyber Space stage is located at the dead end of a narrow rock pass in the linear tutorial portion of Kronos Island. With the stage being a starting point of the game, no amount of Portal Gears is required to be obtained in order to gain access to the Cyber Space stage.
Story[]
At the beginning of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic, Tails and Amy are about to reach towards the Starfall Islands in Tornado while following traces of the Chaos Emeralds, until a wormhole appears above the sky and sucks Sonic into it. After that, Sonic wakes up in the Cyber Space, while finding it to resemble a place he's familiar with except the fact it is being represented in digitized form.[2][3]
After escaping from Cyber Space, Sonic is then next seen waking up near close to Portal in a narrow rock pass located on Kronos Island, one of the Starfall Islands.[2] While Sonic wonders being the only survivor of the wormhole, he then hears a Mysterious voice calling him and reconizing him of escaping from the Cyber Space through his own power and cryptically considers him as the "key".[4] While Sonic tries to ask about saving his friends, the voice commands to find the Chaos Emeralds, destroy Titans and take down the walls between dimensions before becoming silent once again.[5] After attempting to ask the context to these commands, Sonic sets off the adventure of finding his friends in the Starfall Islands.
Gameplay[]
As 1-1 is the first Cyber Space stage in the game, does not contain exclusive gimmicks aside common items and objects of the game. However, Hint Rings are commonly found to instruct the player in performing basic movements in the beginning of the playthrough.
Overview[]
The stage starts with Sonic seen falling down to the trailhead of a linear pathway with few gradual turns via a Portal Gate. During that path, the player will encounter Dash Panels along with three stacks of crates, the latter two of which have Jump Panels before them that allow Sonic to jump over them. Afterwards, the player will go around a loop before being launch by Jump Panels to the next section.
After making a few jumps up, the first of which involves a Wide Spring, the player will make a wide left turn that leads to a large gap. Over the gap is a floating Spring that can be targeted by using the Homing Attack to reach the other side, but if it is not attacked in time. Sonic will fall to the bottom of the shaft, where he can use a Wide Spring to get back up. The top of that shaft has a short Grind Rail that Sonic can jump on before continuing on with the main path.
After passing the Star Post, the player will encounter several Moto Bugs before being pulled up by a Pulley. At the top, there are more Moto Bugs along with a wall with Spikes that will hurt him if he runs into them. After passing them, some Jump Panels will take him to a large corkscrew, before one final straight away that leads him to the Portal Gate.

Red Star Ring locations[]
- In the first section of the stage containing wooden crates, the player can lean to the left and leap to the mid-air and catch the first Red Star Ring by using the single Jump Panel in front of the third stacks of crates with single Super Ring on the top.
- While climbing on the steep terrain with line of Wooden and Unbreakable Containers placed on the top, the center Wooden Container hides the second Red Star Ring when breaking it.
- At the mid-point of the stage before the Star Post, the third Red Star Ring is located above the route. The player can use Grind Rail to gain momentum and use the Double Jump leap to the mid-air and catch the Red Star Ring.
- When the player is launched to the air by Jump Panels to reach to the corkscrew route in far distance, a Red Star Ring is floating on the way. The player has to choose the center Jump Panel in order to pick it up in the mid-air.
- On the last straight section leading towards the Portal Gate, a Red Star Ring is floating above center of the route right before the last line of Dash Panels.
Trivia[]
- The level layout of this stage is structured very similarly to Windmill Isle Daytime Act 1 from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed.[6]
- When the demo of Sonic Frontiers was presented at Gamescom trade fair event in August 2022, all time requirements for different Ranks were adjusted to "99:59.00", meaning that the player would receive S Rank regardless how the Cyber Space stage has been cleared, including 1-1.[7]
