IDW Publishing, opgericht in 1999, is een Amerikaans stripboekbedrijf dat bekend staat om zijn gelicentieerde aanpassingen van films, televisieseries, tekenfilms en videogames. Het acroniem "IDW" staat voor "Idea and Design Works." Met name sinds 2018 is het bedrijf verantwoordelijk voor de publicatie van de lopende Sonic the Hedgehog-stripserie. Deze serie, gebaseerd op de populaire videospelfranchise met dezelfde naam, draagt bij aan IDWs gevarieerde portfolio van gelicentieerde stripboekaanpassingen.

Op 21 juli 2017 maakten Sega en IDW Publishing een gezamenlijke aankondiging over hun samenwerking om in 2018 een nieuwe Sonic the Hedgehog-stripreeks te lanceren. Deze samenwerking ontstond in de nasleep van de annulering van Archie Comics' langlopende Sonic the Hedgehog-stripreeks (waarvan enkele personeel, o.a. Ian Flynn^[1] en Tracy Yardley^[2] voor deze serie terugkwamen voor de nieuwe).^[3] De eerste officiële creatieve top voor dit nieuwe project vond plaats op 3 augustus 2017 en markeerde het begin van het creatieve ontwikkelingsproces voor de komende Sonic-stripreeks.^[4]

Tijdens New York Comic Con 2017 kwamen de eerste details over IDWs publicatie van de Sonic-strips naar voren via flyers. Deze teasers beloofden "gloednieuwe verhalen" met een mix van "oude en nieuwe personages." De aankondiging omvatte ook de geplande release van de eerste nummers in april 2018.^[5] Een daaropvolgende onthulling schetste plannen voor een vier weken durend evenement in april 2018, waarbij elke week een nieuw nummer van de Sonic-strip zou verschijnen, wat anticipatie en enthousiasme wekte opwinding op onder fans voor de komende serie.^[1]
