@BurgerGuyForever I think the reveal was thematically inappropriate because at that point Shadow doesn't care anymore. He's going to let his actions here and now define him instead of the past he may or may not have. That's the whole idea behind "This is who I am!"

I prefer stories where the main character is an underdog. The way Sonic is depicted runs counter to that, and erasing his one fear would only compound the issue.

That's funny, my definition of appealing to adult fans is giving the stories and setting depth, nuance and complexity. I've had enough of the series dumbing itself down.

Well hang on, how much am I getting paid for this? I want it up front too - none of this "as soon as I conquer the world" nonsense.

• Sonic being able to no-sell Dark Gaia's influence on his own without noticing.

• Who can use chaos emeralds being restricted by something inherent instead of a learned skill or character trait.

• Knuckles being an endling. Nothing of consequence would change if he were part of a small community.

• Most of the lore established in Frontiers. I hate how the series is trying to erase its fantasy elements.

• All of the major landmasses being exclusively human territory. It kills my idea for an Unleashed sequel.

To everyone saying Sonic shouldn't hate deep water, why would you get rid of his only real weakness? This series is already too much of a power fantasy as it is!

I'll have to hear more before I can give any judgement.

Only three games to date have ended with Eggman worse off than mildly inconvenienced, and by the next game it was like nothing happened.

He uses a Super Scope in Yoshi's Safari, does that count?

I think they're part of his gloves, but I've seen people insist they're part of his hand. Some have even claimed he also lacks individual fingers!

Thanks for your input, but I'm not sure you quite understood what I'm saying.

I don't want a character's design to be the only thing I like about them because it makes me feel shallow. That's why I wanted Infinite to be more complex, so there could be something I could point to when people asked why I like him.

I guess at this point I just want to know the way I've been approaching this is valid and I'm not wrong about everything.

We both know that isn't what I mean. I remember people insisting that Knuckles being present in Heroes, Sonic 2006 and Generations instead of guarding the master emerald was "character derailment" and that if they were in charge he'd only leave Angel Island if there was a global crisis. Maybe I haven't seen every angle, but from my perspective it seems like most of the fandom wants Knuckles to be little more than an extension of the master emerald rather than the other way around.

@Flowerpuns But that's all Pontaff's fault! It doesn't mean he's inherently a bad character! He deserves another chance with a competent writer!

I wish I had your optimism, but until the fandom stops losing its collective mind when Knuckles shows up in a non-master emerald related context I'm going to remain skeptical. It doesn't help that Sega even has a mandate specifically to keep him on Angel Island.

If Knuckles decided he didn't want anything to do with the master emerald anymore, would he have the option to abandon it once and for all? If he doesn't, or if doing so is such a bad idea that he shouldn't, I consider him enslaved.

This makes me want a more complex version of the Sonic series without a strict status quo even more. We could see Knuckles question whether he actually wants to spend his whole life devoted to a task that was forced onto him and have a whole arc where he finds ways to reduce or even remove his burden.

I still don't think any of this is fair to Knuckles. You can argue all you want that he likes guarding the Master Emerald, but happiness in enslavement is still enslavement. There has to be a better alternative than the current situation. Maybe instead of shooting down my attempts to find one, you could offer ideas of your own?
