Four things I would like to see happen if Shadow got his own movie:

That he would be the deuteragonist while Sonic and the others have a smaller role compared to the game;

That he would develop a crush on Shadow just like he did on Robotnik (who is missing);

That he would use weapons like him;

That more about him would be explored in this movie, much like Wade in the Knuckles TV series.

Reasons:

He used to work with G.U.N. and was elderly;

The one who tried to shoot Maria is ruthless enough to be willing to defy Walters' orders;

This explains why Walters wanted him dead.

Reasons why this version of Gerald may be less tragic:

In the games he was originally a very intentional person who wanted to help humanity, in the films it is not known if he was ever a good person before this tragedy happened;

In the games he was executed shortly after, he never had a chance to move on, in the films he is alive 50 years later, he should have already passed that way (mainly because he still had Robotnik);

If he betrays Robotnik (because he wanted to rule), that could make him even less tragic.

Because in the games he already looks like Sonic.

My mother prefers A Minecraft Movie over Sonic the Hedgehog 3 because of Jack Black.

She will possibly only appear in the post-credits.

For me, Shadow twisted Knuckles' hand more than his arm could handle, reaching a point where it already hurts.
