Hi guys I’m back after a short break–
NO ONE CARES
(also I might have copied down a bit from the wiki)
Sonic was nothing more than a joke now after 06 and Shadow. Sonic definitely could’ve died, but the franchise stayed alive because… 06 sold well? Yeah, on the XBOX 360 Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 was a really successful game in terms of sales. It doesn’t matter what anybody says on the internet- parents will buy games for their kids. Secret Rings was praised by critics, so Sonic still came back because they made the money. I’m glad Sonic survived. So, let’s dive into 2008’s Sonic Unleashed, blue’s next adventure on the XBOX 360. The game is cut down into one campaign, so I’m going to discuss the story and then the gameplay, music and all that stuff after the entire story.
We begin with the most beautifully animated, or the best cutscene of the entire franchise. Seriously, this cutscene is just everything I want from a cutscene. Sonic is confronting Eggman aboard his space armada. Sonic boosts forward and breaks all the robots, until Eggman comes down in his mech and unleashes a flurry of machine gun fire. Eggman grabs Sonic but the Hedgehog uses the Chaos Emeralds and becomes Super Sonic, but Eggman traps Sonic and takes the Chaos Emeralds from him and uses their power on his machine, which splits earth and a being called Dark Gaia is unleashed, which was the doctor’s intention. The evil energy of Dark Gaia turns Sonic into the “werehog” and the Chaos Emeralds have lost all their power and are gray now. Eggman opens an airlock which makes Sonic and the emerlads fall down to earth, because you know, Sonic characters and breathe in space and survive falls from infinite height. Sonic meets a winged imp-like creature, who he names Chip. They discover the city of Apotosand meet Tails at night. Sonic turns back to himself in the day because Dark Gaia and only maintain his form in night so everything turns back to normal in the day. Tails still recognizes Sonic in his werehog form and says that Proffeser Pickle of Spagonia University might be able to help them. Pickle has been kidnapped by Eggman for his knowledge on Dark Gaia.
After traveling to Mazuri and freeing him, Pickle explains the nature of Dark Gaia and taht restoring the Chaos Emeralds in the Gaia Temples will return the planet to normal. Sonic and Chip set out to do this. and then is one of my favorite scenes, where the two run into Amy at night, but she doesn’t recognize Sonic and thinks Ist one of those cases she mistakes some other guy for Sonic, so she says sorry and walks away, and you can see Sonic is quite upset about it.
He later saves Amy from Dark Gaia’s influence and she, upon learning her savior’s identity, decides to help Sonic and Pickle.
Eggman makes plans to reassemble Dark Gaia and finish Eggmanland. Once the sixth emerald is restored, it’s revealed that Chip is atcually Light Gaia, the opposite of Dark Gaia, and he lost his memories because, like Dark Gaia, he was prematurely awakened by Egghead, where Chip and Dark were awakened too early; likewise, Dark Gaia has not fully reborn due to is premature awakening, and Sonic must stop Eggman before Dark Gaia’s full powers return to normal. Sonic travels to the location of the last temple, over which Eggman has built Eggmanland using an extraction of Dark Gaia’s power, and you start the longest sonic level of all time. Sonic manages to restore the last emerald and defeat the Egg Dragoon, but Dark Gaia becomes complete, by draining the dark energy from Sonic that turned him into the werehog, and knocking Eggman out of the way to keep the power for himself.
Chips uses all the Gaia Temples to form the Gaia Colossus to combat Dark Gaia with. Sonic recovers from his draining and turns into Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds and the final boss begins. Perfect Dark Gaia is defeated, but the battle leaves Sonic completely drained of his power to escape. As the final continent moves back into place, Chip flings Sonic back into the surface as he stays behind. Later, Sonic wakes up, and grabs Chip’s necklace, then puts it on his arm. He runs off with Tails, who is in the Tornado 3, to another adventure.
Well, that’s the story. Dear My Friend is the credits track, which is quite emotional. Literally every dark era game is about Sonic meeting a new character, and then there’s a sad ending, along with a sad song. Elise, Chip, Shahra, to name a few. The main theme of the game is Endless Possibility. This song makes me think of the situation Sonic Team were in at this time. They just released a disaster, but still kept going even after that to make a good Sonic game. Crush 40 had nothing to do with this game’s soundtrack. I do think that this is one of the greatest Sonic soundtracks of all time, but it isn’t 06 good. Since you’re going to a ton of places in the game, the music centers around the culture and stuff of that place. Sonic Unleashed goes around the globe as you restore the Chaos Emeralds. I think it’s really creative and fun to see Sonic and Chip enjoy the cultures and other things of the regions. The humans are here too. They look much more cartoon-like and actually look like they’re in the same world as these cartoon animals unlike 06. You can interact with them in the game inside the small hub worlds and some of the characters tell their own little story. This brings me to discuss the hub worlds in this game. I never thought 06 needed such large hub worlds- players would easily get lost or distracted. Navigating them was extremely annoying in that game. Here, the hub worlds are relatively small and don’t have anything distracting so the player can head straight into levels.
Now- finally- the gameplay. The gameplay is split into two- day Sonic and night/werehog Sonic. This game was just cut down to Sonic after 06, there might be two playstyles, but it’s basically the same blue rat. Let’s start with day Sonic. Pretty much everything from 06 was cut- and along with it, the adventure gameplay. So, what would be the new playstyle? The boost formula takes the boost from the Rush games and puts it in 3D as the new way for Sonic to control. Just like the 2D games on the DS, with the press of a button Sonic will dash forward at extreme speeds. The games before already had tons of automation, and that increases with this formula as Sonic goes forward automatically. Well it’s better than the nothing segments of 06. I think the boost gameplay is quite fun. You need to fill up your boost gauge by collecting rings instead of doing tricks. The quick step lets Sonic to move left or right instantly while going at high speeds. It’s fun to blow through everything. Now, because of the boost, the developers would have to make even longer stages so they wouldn’t be over in 20 seconds. A solution to this is to have 2D sections which are much easier to design, than making everything longer and making background details since it’s a 7th Gen title. Day Sonic is always a nice experience, and some of his set pieces are just great and fun. When you walk across a dash ramp, there are these do or die events where you have to press random button combinations in a matter of seconds. But… you can pause the game and practice the button pattern.
Now, there’s the other show- night. I’m gonna call the werehog “the werehog” because it’s simple. I haven’t really talked much about him. As I mentioned in the story summary, the werehog is the nighttime version of Sonic with Dark Gaia’s negative energy. There are the day levels but also the night levels. The werehog was only made to make the game much longer as it’s much easier to design levels around a slow character instead of one that goes ahead like a car. The werehog is much slower and focuses a lot more on combat. You need to keep combos while fighting for bonuses. The combat is actually quite satisfying, just like Shadow in 06. I do enjoy combat in these games. But the werehog isn’t for everyone- I know. This gimmick really holds the game back and ruins the experience for many players. At night, you’ll go around defeating Dark Gaia’s minions, or whatever they’re called, and Eggman mechs. I don’t really have a whole lot to say about the werehog, so let’s jump to another topic.
In levels you can earn XP which can be used to level up Sonic and the werehog. You can upgrade Sonic’s boost and stuff, but it’s very important to upgrade the werehog’s combat in my opinion. This is like a RPG system. There’s also one of the worst parts of the game- medals. You have to collect these medals in stages and you need enough to access levels. This just makes the game longer and makes you redo stages- a huge problem I and with Rush Adventure. It’s very, very annoying. There’s also the tornado stages on the Tornado 3, where you also have to press random buttons to attack enemies in the sky. I believe this is much more appealing than the sky stages in Sonic 2 and Sonic Adventure. Eggmanland is the longest stage ever. It takes 15 minutes minimum if you know what you’re doing, which is unlikely. It’s so long that you switch between the two playstyles in the same stage. The stage is absolutely fantastic. The bosses in the game are pretty fun. It’s a blast playing them. Egg Dragoon is absolutely crazy as Eggman will not stop until he has eliminated the hedgehog, to the point you reach the core of the planet. Well, what do I think of Sonic Unleashed? It’s a fun game which has a much better reputation today, as many people love it unlike they did in 2008. I’ll give it a solid 9/10. It’s a great game, at least after the failure of 06.
