Hello everyone, for my first "actual post", I would like to explain why I believe Shadow (2024 film version) is a hero (and my favorite character) even when he is on the wrong side. I hope you enjoy.
In Paramount's latest Sonic the Hedgehog film, we finally get to see Shadow, Sonic's canonical rival, show his stuff on the big screen. Shadow has traditionally been called an "anti-hero", as he is often portrayed fighting on the wrong side, or at least against Sonic, who is the main hero of the franchise. However, Shadow seems to me to be more of a "tragic hero", as in a hero with complexities and a troubled backstory.

The reason I say this is because Shadow is not fighting for his own self-gratification, but a form of justice (albeit twisted). Unlike Gerald Robotnik, who seems to just be out for revenge, Shadow considers what Maria would have wanted if she were still here, which helps him ultimately realize his mistakes and help Team Sonic (and Eggman) beat Gerald. On both sides, he fought for Maria. When on the wrong side, he was doing the wrong thing for the right reasons, wanting justice for GUN killing the only joy he had in his life, the only real family he had ever had. Then, when he joined up with Sonic, he fought to prevent the destruction of humanity, in loving memory of Maria.
In the end, Shadow is a Tragic Hero because, even when on the wrong side, He did not fight for an objectively evil thing. He let his fear and anger take over, and was thus more easily influenced by Gerald Robotnik, but was ultimately fighting for Maria the whole time, which is what made him capable of the right choice in the end. If he had been fighting for a selfish cause, such as domination (Eggman) or selfish revenge (Robtnik) he would be a true villain. The key difference between Shadow and Gerald can be seen in their exchange aboard the ARK. Shadow asks if this is what Maria would have wanted, while the Professor tells him that what she would have wanted does not matter and to think of "what they took from us". This scene, I think, best describes my point:
Shadow is ultimately fighting for Maria, while the Professor is fighting for self-gratifying revenge.
We must also take into consideration that Sonic essentially made the same choice as Shadow, letting the near death of Tom drive him to vengeance. However, Sonic was given the chance to make the right choice, and he did. Shadow would not be given that opportunity for fifty years. GUN locked him away in stasis, leaving him only with that last memory of Maria's murder to relive over and over again. And then, his anger was manipulated and fueled by Robotnik. If Shadow had been given the chance sooner, he might have taken it.
All that matters is that he ultimately did make the right choice when Sonic offered him the opportunity, that is why he is a hero.
Sometimes the difference between Hero and Villain, is not as clear as we would like to believe. If one looks closer, however, they will see in Shadow the Tragic Hero.
