Made these a few minutes ago.
I don't the Freedom Fighters are no longer canon to the Sonic lore. However, they already made 3D concept art of the characters. Plus, we did get that cameo in Sonic Forces: Looming Shadow.
I know they were only included as merely Easter Eggs. But there could be a possible chance they can be canon. My suggestion: reboot them again. The best way to add them to the story is seeing how they were 'not' in the story. The world of Sonic the Hedgehog has a lot of amazing places. But the one place that hasn't been explored is Sonic's birthplace, Christmas Island.
According to Sonic himself, it is a strange place, much different than anywhere on Earth, filled with strange robots and animals. I figured it to be based out of the worlds from the early Sonic cartoon. So I figured Sally Acorn, Nicole the Holo-Lynx, Rotor the Walrus, Bunnie Rabbot, and Antoine D'Coolette are all childhood friends of Sonic (BEFORE the games). Sally could still be royalty there, Nicole's origin can still be relevant, Bunnie could have gotten her robotic limbs from an incident at a young age, Rotor specializes in technology powered by Power Rings, and Antoine could be once a romantic rival of Sonic's for Sally affection.
In their pre-teen years, Sonic started to get bored of the living on the island, despite being in a relationship with Sally. But all that changed when one day, a man named "Dr. Ivo Robotnik" attacked all of Christmas Island. He came to the island decades ago to study their strange technology, and has returned in his quest to conquer the world. Sonic, Sally, and the rest of their friends fought back against Robotnik and drove him away from the island. Inspired by the event, Sonic decided to leave Christmas Island to go see the world and satisfy his never-ending thirst for adventure, while Sally and others stayed complete their lives. So Sonic took his new plane, The Tornado, and left home, where he would later run into Robotnik again, in the Green Hill Zone on South Island.
Meanwhile, Sally and the others remain on the island, improving themselves into the Freedom Fighters we know today. Sonic would visit on curtain occasions. Sometimes he brings his new friends and tell his old friends about his adventures. They inspired them to go out into the world and have their own adventures, to do some good everywhere. They even consulted for G.U.N. when it was still active. The more Sonic saves the day, the more Sally notices she and the rest of the Freedom Fighters seem insignificant to him now-a-days. She also noticed how close he was getting to one of his friends, Amy Rose. Sally seem happy that there is someone in Sonic's life that could really fulfill keeping him on the right track of who he is meant to be, as she did long ago. So one day, she official broke things of with him, and started a new path.
The Freedom Fighters can go on secret adventures outside the modern Sonic content. They'd battle enemies that really made any appearances; like Fang, Witchcart, and Lyric. Even team-up with unseen and classic characters; like Sticks the Badger, Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Honey the Cat, Trip the Sungazer, and even Bark the Polar and Bean the Dynamite.
Plus, it might improve the world of Sonic the Hedgehog by adding a more competent and organized group, since characters have no idea what they're doing anymore in the IDW comic series.
The Freedom Fighters (Sally, Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor) (and with Tails) make a cameo in Sonic X-treme (cancelled)?.

For those who don’t like the freedom fighters, why do you not like them? And give good reasons for why.
I have to apologize to @ElectroKyurem for having him make those KFF inspired characters? So I ask him, why not make something out of that useless idea? How about making them even more original and making a TV news team out of them? For instance, Alex Goldwing could be a street reporter interested in the prophecies of the Echidna clan.
PS I apologize to @Mystic Monkey fir harassing him with this…
@ElectroKyurem , buddy, I am sorry I made you make those character ideas out of my Rally for Sally phase. Why don’t you put those ideas to good use? No rebel team (that concept has been done in a one-time thing in Forces) and they haven’t met Sonic. They will instead be a misfit group of friends working in different sectors of GUN, the character based off of Sally can have a derpy lizard for a pet and GUN might even get a mascot!
Food for thought, buddy. Food for thought.
So, since SEGA won’t be using any of the DiC characters, I have decided to make new characters based off of the KFF, but when I tried to, they were too close to the original, so I am looking for tips, mainly from my buddies @Mystic Monkey and @ElectroKyurem .
You know how SEGA sometimes puts in stuff from the other media, including the characters? Well, I have a strong feeling that the DiC characters were way so out there, and I mean SO WAY TOO OUT THERE, that if we were to retool them for the main canon, it would be better if we just make whole new characters based off of the DiC ones. That is why we won't see the Knothole Freedom Fighters anytime soon...
Remember how I came up with that spin-off series about Shadow and GUN? Well, I was thinking we could reuse the KFF as side characters who often help Shadow.
Sally "Princess" Acorn (she got that nickname because she is of royal blood and is very rich and lives in a mansion and is a bit snobby) works in the IT department of GUN and was the one who invented the GUN AI Helper. For that helper, she used Nicole, who is GUN's super adorable chibi mascot. She has a pet komodo named Dulcy (got the komodo idea from @ElectroKyurem ) and is a big fan of Sonic, as well as the other prophecies of the Knuckles Clan (based that one off of the Sonally ship). She has an evil cousin named Alice Salvador (just slavaging Anti-Sally from the Archie comics) who is a scam hacker and often fights with Sally.
Then we have Antoine Depaideu and Carol "Bunny Rabbot" McCarter. They are wildly known as the romantic couple working in the Training facility and Gym respectively. Antoine is a bit shy and nervous, while Carol got her nickname because every muscle on her limb except on her right arm is bionic because her real muscles were undeveloped. But at least these new muscles work exactly like the real thing making her a buff gal with a cowpoke additude.
Finally we have Henry "Rotor" O'Conor. Rotor seems like a fat, lazy and sleepy guy, but is actually very productive when it comes to his job, which is Weapon Assembly and Maintenance over at GUN.
Thank you and I hope you enjoyed these ideas.
Basically, I have an idea for a spin-off franchise involving the various agents of GUN. Not just Team Dark, but also some various odds and ends from various sectors. This could be a great chance to revive the KFF!

They just don’t have any room for their own roles, so food luck with trying to come up with ideas on how to put them into the main canon.
