Dimps was probably under a ton of pressure in 2010. They had to develop Sonic 4 AND a DS version of Sonic Colors. So, one of these would probably suck. Luckily it was Sonic 4. Colors DS can easily be called Sonic Rush Three. The gameplay is basically the same just by looking at it. The biggest difference is Blaze The Cat is not playable. I think just like its Wii counterpart, this game is great. Let’s start with the story, which is still small, but it’s more than the Wii version. The setup is the same- only this time the rest of the cast is here and they interact with Sonic and Tails. Orbot and Cubot find Cream and try to take Cheese, her Chao pet, thinking it’s a Wisp. Remember I said in 06 that the events of that game was a “distant memory” to the characters and not completely erased? Here’s some explanation: at the end of that game, Elise feels the blow of Sonic’s speed, and says it felt familiar, somehow. I bring this up because when Sonic meets up with Silver The Hedgehog and Blaze, Tails says it feels as if the two had worked together in the past.
We see Knuckles, Rouge, Shadow, Omega, yeah, basically all the main characters. I believe this to be the canon story of colors as it’s more believable as in the Wii version it was just Sonic and Tails at the entire park. After Nega Wisp Armor, though, there’s a new final boss for this version. Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to turn into Super Sonic to defeat, if I remember correctly, Yacker’s mother, who has been turned into a Nega Wisp. Unlike the Wii version, Super Sonic is in the final boss. That’s it for the story. The gameplay?
The gameplay is literally the same as Rush, as I explained. Tricks are now gone though, and replaced with the white wisp capsules just like the Wii version, and those fill your boost instead. There are some new wisps, too. The Butst Wisp is here, and also Violet Void. Red Burst just sees you burst around and kill enemies or, burn them. Violet Void is fun to use as you suck everything like a Black hole. The music is mostly compressed versions from the Wii, which is fine. The areas are the same, and levels are in 2D, of course. Also I’ve forgotten to mention but the Rush games use 3D aesthetics because of the capability of the DS, but the angle is in 2D. The bosses are much more memorable, as in Wii the bosses would be over in a few minutes or less than a minute. They were just incredibly easy in that version. I think here they are much harder and something I’d come back to.
The level design is phenomenal. I love going through these stages. Just like Wii, only Sonic is playable. They’ve abandoned multiple playable characters after 06. Sonic moves from Unleashed have been translated to 2D for the new system. Homing attack is much better in this game as well. I think that’s it for Sonic Colors DS. It’s a fun 2D version of the already great Wii experience, and one of dimps’ best games.
