Shadow The Hedgehog (game)
Around this time, mature games were becoming much more popular in the gaming industry. SEGA wanted to get into this. Of course, our hero Sonic won’t really fit with the mature vibe, so why not take edgy hedgy Shadow from SA2, since he’s so popular and would fit better? And that’s how we got 2005’s Shadow The Hedgehog. I heard this game was supposed to be T+ but then ESRB introduced the E10+ rating, and Sonic Team toned some of the stuff down to get the new rating. I’m just gonna get this clear, but this game is just utter trash and dumpster fire. Like seriously, this game got ratings like 4/10, which is really bad. I don’t think anyone really enjoys this game, but I’ll get to the gameplay after some story discussion, which is also absolutely horrible. Takashi Lizuka took over writing for this game, and man, he doesn’t understand Shadow at all. Like, nothing makes sense. In this game there are ten different endings, but they’re all just What If scenarios because none of them are canon. This game is supposed to reveal if Shadow is the real Shadow or not, and the entire marketing of this game was that the player could choose if Shadow will be evil or a hero, which is such a misuse of his character. He was just extremely misguided in SA2, and in Heroes he’s not evil at all.
The first level of the game is Westopolis. The story is that the Black Arms are invading the city and Shadow doesn’t care, but then a figure shows up, named Black Doom. Black Doom says that if Shadow brings him the seven Chaos Emeralds he’ll tell Shadow about his past, which Shadow is eager to (although Rouge could’ve just done it). In Westopolis you have to pick between Dark, Neutral and Hero missions. In the Dark mission you help Black Doom invade the city, in Hero you help Sonic take down the black arms, and in Neutral you just take the chaos emeralds for yourself. This game has a bad habit of reusing stages and assets a lot too. The story is just nonsense, like how Black Doom is mad at Shadow for doing the NEUTRAL mission but he’s not mad when Shadow does the HERO mission. And none of the paths make sense. Let’s go over the neutral path for example, why don’t we? The ending of it is that Shadow meets Omega, and the two find Eggman. Eggman reveals that Shadow in fact, IS a cheap robot copy, and you face his Egg Dealer. And in the end of it Shadow has the Chaos Emeralds, and says he’ll rule the world, and then just straight up kills Eggman as the screen turns black and you hear Eggman scream. If you follow the Dark route then you’ll be the black comet, the Black Arms’ base. You can help the comet by stopping the G.U.N soldiers or in the hero mission you can help Knuckles reach the core of the comet to destroy it. Choosing the dark mission has Shadow defeat the Diablon and Sonic, and then Shadow will get the last emerald and will become Black Doom’s minion and assist the Black Arms’ conquest of all the earth. Choosing the Hero mission has Shadow and Knuckles fight Eggman on his Egg Dealer. After the boss Shadow gets the last Chaos Emerald, and kills Eggman again. The endings of this game are Neutral-Hero, Neutral-Dark, Dark-Dark, Dark-Hero, Hero-Hero, Hero-Dark, True Dark-Dark, True Dark-Hero, True Hero-Dark, and True Hero-Hero. You can see a pattern.
There’s different paths you can take to reach one of five different final levels, and you have to do hero and dark missions on all of them, with no neutral mission. I discussed two of them. And I’m not discussing all of them because then we’d be here all day. But just by seeing these endings you can see How messed up this is. If I explained the WHOLE campaigns, then you’d get it. Nothing in this game makes any SENSE, and it’s obviously very try -hard writing. Shadow would never join the Black Arms, I just don’t see it. There’s also the unnamed GUN commander, who hates Shadow for whatever reason. We don’t why until one of the endings where Shadow ends up with him. His ugly, terrifying child self witnessed Black Doom give his blood to Gerald so Shadow could have consciousness, and he was friends with Maria on the ARK, and since Shadow was the reason Maria died, he holds a grudge. That felt pretty rushed. Honestly the GUN commander is nothing but annoying in the entire game. There’s also the president, who is on GUN’s side. This game tries to put a bunch of random scenes to look mature, when it really isn’t and just becomes cringe. Like when Shadow finds a Chaos Emerald in one of the paths he’s like : “come on, guys! This is like taking candy from a baby!” There’s the words (mild bad word) “damn” and “hell” in this game and it feels like they were trying to get the characters to say damn as many times as possible. And there’s a pretty funny scene where Shadow says “where’s that DAMN fourth Chaos Emerald?”
Okay, finally gameplay. This is just mounds of junk and trash. Like, you accelerate so fast that you get like a hundred unfair deaths in one level. Maybe a good part about the gameplay is the guns, but they’re not very good either. You get a gun to shoot enemies, and yeah. Guns were a huge part of the advertising of this game. The game is just no fun. It’s like Knuckles’ Chaotix where the game is so RAGING and BORING to go through. It’s 6 hours of boredom. And also, there’s 326 routes to reach the endings. YES. You read that correctly. 326. Sometimes I also wonder how this game came out after a game as light hearted as Heroes. Even if this game uses the adventure gameplay it’s just not good.
After getting the ten endings you get the canon last story, which reveals NONE of the ten endings are canon, as we see Shadow with the Chaos Emeralds ready to know about his past. All of the aforementioned endings are actually distortions of the truth. The true story of Shadow's past is told in the Last Story. Shadow walks to Black Doom as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge and Eggman come to warn him, as Black Doom will destroy the planet with the Chaos Emeralds. Black Doom puts gas that makes the others unable to move, but Shadow stands up, shocking Doom (this is probably because Shadow is not a natural being). Then a recording appears of Gerald Robotnik, before the death of Maria. It turns out the real purpose of the Eclipse Cannon was to stop Black Doom, but Gerald went crazy after Maria died and repurposed the Eclipse Cannon. This shows Gerald was a good person actually before, and Shadow was supposed to help humanity. Black Doom turns into his final form Devil Doom and becomes the final boss. Shadow uses the Chaos Emeralds to turn into Super Shadow and heads to stop Devil Doom as an instrumental version of Live and Learn plays. The boss itself is fine I guess.
In the background the game’s main vocal theme, "I Am… All Of Me” by Crush 40 plays in the background. I haven’t mentioned the music yet, but yeah, it’s pretty much the only good thing about every game in this era. This game has many vocal songs and all of them are great in my opinion. Something that makes no sense is that the developers snuck in a voice line from Eggman in the nine minute mark which no one is gonna see, and he tells Shadow that he really is the true Ultimate Life Form. Why is something SO important snuck in somewhere almost no one will see? After you defeat Devil Doom, Shadow blows up the Black Comet with the Eclipse Cannon, killing Black Doom, and his entire race. Everyone celebrates. GUN realizes they were wrong about Gerald and Shadow all along. We see Shadow on the ARK, holding a picture of Gerald and Maria. He decides the past is behind him, and says, “goodbye, Shadow The Hedgehog”. I mean, he knows about Maria’s wish, what more does he need to know? Ending this just, bad game.
