Sonic has 3 movies, one which is development, while Mario has only one movie with a sequel in development. Mario Movie needs to expand more first, then work on a crossover.

@Nidza majstor because Mario and Sonic are fierce enemies.
Maybe in your deluded reality, they are
I like to imagine Sonic and Mario as "frienemies". It would make a more interesting dynamic than "Oh, Sonic games are on Nintendo consoles, so they're friends now."
@Mystic Monkey If this crossover movie happens, what would you like plot to be? I think it should happen at least after Sonic the Hedgehog 5 movie and after Super Mario gets his third movie, not before that maybe
Well, as I said, I only imagine it would be possible if one movie makes an adaption of the crossover character.
I mean, the "Earth" is Sonic films is live-action while the "Earth" in the Super Mario Bros. film is just as 3D animated as the Mushroom Kingdom.
==As a direct crossover==
If "Sega/Paramount" and "Nintendo/Illumination" are willing to collaborate a direct crossover, then there would need to be an explanation of the differing "dimensions" between them. (Kind of like The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour series, where the characters notice and acknowledge the change of perception and bodies when going from Dimmsdale to Retroville).
==As an adaption==
Bu-u-ut I prefer my idea for a "short" instead. Where instead of Mario, Sonic accidentally breaks a pipe in the kitchen and calls an anonymous plumber for help. The plumber, having never seen a blue alien hedgehog before is somewhat reluctant to help, gets annoyed by Sonic and Tom & Jerry like antics between the two before resolving their differences. The plumber wouldn't have to be named, just simply resemble Mario. That way Sega/Paramount wouldn't even have to pay for rights from Nintendo.
==Rough plot in mind==
I would like some sort of conflict to be encouraged between Sonic and Mario. Maybe Dr. Eggman sent Metal Sonic to harass the mushroom-folk and Bowser sent Shadow Mario to attack the Wachowski's home, thus causing the heroes to think the other did it.
Either that, or some higher dimensional being summons Sonic and Mario from their respected worlds to duke it out in some sort of cosmic arena. I don't mean a Smash Bros scenario, more like "chosen champions" sort of thing.
I can imagine the two resolving, but still being somewhat hostile towards one another. You could say in the Super Mario Bros. film that Mario and Donkey Kong started out as "frienemies" but end up more as friends than rivals, while for Sonic and Mario, I'd rather they keep a rivalry between the two, but a fair degree of acknowledgement and some degree of respect as frienemies.
The reason why the whole "frienemy" angle is because both Sonic and Mario have their own groups of friends and enemies with established relationships with them. There are some sources (probably non-canon) where Mario claims Sonic is another good friend of his [*], in which case how would that be different from all your other friends? Why not overly-firm handshakes? Or warm smile behind gritted teeth, snide remarks? Stuff like that?
Good idea, imagine if scene like this also happens, what I mean is if Mario and Luigi from 1993 movie appear in this crossover movie it would be only a cameo
They can't... Bob Hoskins passed away on 29 April 2014.
This is why if my Sonic and the Plumber short was made, they would likely recast the plumber entirely.
I can imagine Chris Pratt for the role of the plumber. Yeah, he looks nothing like Mario, but he doesn't have to be, just the fact he voices him is the humour.
The plumber doesn't have to be named or referred to as Mario. But not having his name mentioned will leave it speculative to the audience. In the very least he could wear a red workman shirt, cap and denim overalls but the more vague from Mario the better.
@Mystic Monkey In which movie you would like this plumber to appear? By the way Ben Schwartz said he would like Sonic and Mario crossover movie with Chris Pratt
I imagine it as a Sonic film short. Maybe taking place either between the first two films, or somewhen where Sonic has the house to himself. So set on Earth, Green Hills. The plumber is either a local plumber from Green Hills, or maybe from New York City.
Having him nameless means Sega/Paramount won't have to pay the rights to Nintendo that way.
Maybe it can be after events of third movie
What do you think?
