It really doesn't matter. It added nothing to the story and no one cared until they changed it
I care.
Don't get me wrong, I agree her lovesick behaviour is pretty much a running gag that has run into the ground, but it's still a pivotal part of her personality that she openly and honestly loves Sonic the Hedgehog. And I admire that about her as a fictional love-interest for Sonic. At least she's open and honest about her feelings, than ship-teasing us with unresolved sexual tension, secret crush bullcrap.
In Sonic Generations, we clearly see this with her attempts to glomp Sonic in the birthday opening scene and when she's rescued, her wish to flirt with him.
It is something we all know, something that's been established since 1995. Amy Rose loves Sonic and shows it on her sleeve.
But, if Sonic X Shadow Generations are going to retcon the birthday opening scene where she doesn't attempt to hug Sonic or her rescue dialogue, to make it that they're just friends. Well to me, that's not retconning, that's "lying". Both to those who haven't played Sonic Generations before and to those who have.
If they don't want Amy hounding after Sonic any more, then sure, but at least make it more organic for her and not be completely removed from it. IDW#2 best exemplifies this.
This Amy still tells Sonic she loves him, but puts her responsibilities for the Restoration first before her desires with Sonic, especially after Sonic offers for her to come with him on his adventure. Both are showing maturity here.
But I don't want Sonic Team pretending Amy never liked Sonic that much and enforcing that lie through Sonic Generations.
I mean, why? Is Amy's love for Sonic no longer "cool" or "PC"?
I bet Disney would never pull this crud with Minnie Mouse.
And then she tells Classic that Sonic is cute, but he keeps getting cuter like
... w h a t
@Mystic Monkey I completely agree with you!
I'm sick of this.
Ah yes. Her character is now ruined because she is no longer the creepy love stuck stalker anymore. Something fans honestly found annoying about her since like Adventure.
Like seriously, how does this "ruin" her character?
In the opening cutscene, she still cares about Sonic (wanting to hug him, being close to him, and handing him cupcakes, honestly the change make Sonic look less mean (for lack of ability to use more adult term), since he isn't shoving hand in her face, but she still love Sonic)
And she doesn't flirt with him as hard, ok? Like she still like Sonic guys, she just isn't the creepy stalker anymore (for good reasons, because that character architect kinda sucks).
Like, the only thing we didn't like about the changes was how they didn't fully reanimated the cutscene (both because Shadow's cutscene are very expressive and fluent, so it kinda makes the base cutscene kinda stiff, and because changes like this or Knuckles classic Sonic cutscene look less odd)
The problem, Sega is acting like Sonic and Amy never had a special relationship ever before.
I want Amy to be special, not to Sonic but to me, the fan consuming the content.
Amy needs focus.
As I said, if Sonic Team wants to move away from her being a creepy stalker, then sure. I agree, it's an overused gag.
They can make her behave more mature around Sonic in later games.
We just don't want Sonic Team to pretend it never happened. Team Sonic Racing she never flirts at all with Sonic, Sonic Twitter Takeover she behaves like she has some unrequited crush on him and in Sonic Frontiers a love story between koco's unfold before her and she never once compares it to her relationship with Sonic. (Her resolve to "go out and share her love to the world" felt more like a subtle break-up speech with Sonic.)
As much as I disagree that IDW Sonic is canon to the games, IDW Sonic (or at least Ian Flynn) written Amy's feelings and maturity for Sonic better than he did for the games.
Also, can you imagine if we did get Sonic Adventure remakes, and they pull this poop with Amy in them?
And my gripe isn't just with Amy, if Sonic Team can get away pulling this crud with Amy, who else can they do this with? Imagine if none of this happened in favour of a cowardly Tails depicted here? Or if Dr. Eggman is depicted more of a soft-hearted misunderstood troublemaker than a proper villain?
Imagine if we finally get a Sonic Adventure remake, but with all these changes put into place? Amy follows Sonic just for help with her bird, Dr. Eggman doesn't attempt to blow up Station Square because that would be mean, thus leaving Tails story unresolved and no one credits him as a hero.
What do you think?
